Capital Fringe Review: ‘The Everything Fringe Show You Want To See in One Fringe Show Fringe Show’ by Jessica Vaughan

The Every Fringe Show You Want To See in One Fringe Show Fringe Show is hilarious! I (and most of the audience) was laughing out loud, uncontrollably, every 20 seconds. Why? The show’s three actors have a lot to do with it. Liz Dutton, Joshua Dick, and Mario Baldessari are both funny and completely fearless. Baldessari also co-wrote the piece with Ethan Slater, and Joshua Dick also directed. They call themselves the Just Barely A Theater Company Theater Company and this is their first show together. It will not be their last. The combination is gold.

Two surprises are that, one, this is a musical. There is the obligatory ‘girl angry at men song.’ There is the chicken song of pure profanity and there is the Fringe song, a hilarious romp through everything that is pure crazy about Fringe. The other surprise is that this is not only about the Fringe, but about the Capital Fringe, and they successfully skewer Washington as well as everything else. The ode to the lack of bathrooms and building codes had the audience snorting. One character shares how much he loves offending people here because we so love to be offended here – throwing our wrath at PEPCO normally reserved for all-out war. The coat hanger they use to hang this madcap plot on is the autobiographical story of one character, played by a last minute stand-in. But that is just an excuse to hold Macbeth without vowels and a dramatic coming out scene in Klingon. Be warned, there is swearing, sex and some very bad jokes. Do not bring children.

Throughout all the jokes, it is clear they all really love the Fringe, which is perhaps what makes this work so well. At one point the audience was on their feet, dancing along to moves such as “hyphenated name” or “driving with a cell phone.”

You must attend to experience this. But if you’ve ever been to any other Fringe show or any other theater, for that matter, or you’ve just passed through our city and marvel at what we complain about, you can’t miss this one.

The Every Fringe Show You Want To See in One Fringe Show Fringe Show will make you laugh and laugh and laugh and fall in love with Fringe all over again.

  1. We must have seen different shows, or be from different generations. It lampooned every low brow, porn instead of plot, fringe show we try hard to avoid, but didn’t even do it that well. Go see My Princess Bride instead if you want to see an example of the best of the Fringe.
