Season Preview: Colonial Players’ 64th – 2012-2013 Season by Beverly van Joolen

The Colonial Players in historic downtown Annapolis is excited to announce that its 64th season highlights the fun, mystery, and magic of theatre! This year’s Play Selection Chair, Ron Giddings, notes his committee paid special attention to shows that underscore aspects of performance that make theatre enticing and provoking to both audiences and artists. “These pieces are very character-driven and intimate,” says Giddings. The scripts are also ensemble pieces, with most characters on stage throughout the show. Giddings adds that this allows the audiences to have a deeper connection with the characters and offers actors meaty roles they can really sink their teeth into.

As for the magic, Bell, Book, and Candle starts off the season with a beautiful witch who, against her better judgment, is bewitched by a journalist who, quite inconveniently, is a mortal.

The season continues with an intense tete-a-tete between a family battling from two sides of a political ideology in Sunlight, then on to the classic presentation of the beloved and traditional A Christmas Carol.

To ring in the new year, audiences will experience a colorful splash of tales told by a marooned storyteller in Shipwrecked!, followed by the heartwarming saga of an irascible judge in Trying. Colonial Players’ big spring musical is the historical-minded 1776, followed by the Pulitzer-Prize nominated In the Next Room or The Vibrator Play, which explores the sensual awakening of women in the Victorian era, and how electricity rocked their world. The theatre-in-the-round closes its season with the wild and wonderful theatrical farce Taking Steps, by the prolific Alan Ayckbourn.

The Colonial Players is an all-volunteer theatre. Auditions are open, and actors of all backgrounds and experience levels are encouraged to audition. Volunteers for both front and back of house are welcome at any point in the year. The theatre is located at 108 East Street in Annapolis.

Parking is free at the State Garage on Calvert Street, and for the first show, eCruiser – a clean, green and free transportation service – will pick up and drop off theatre patrons at any local restaurant or parking garage.

The opening weekend of every show offers a Buy-One-Get-One-Half-Off special. We also offer discounts for Students, Seniors, Military, and Groups. We are currently selling both Season Tickets as well as the 10-Seat FlexTicket through the Box Office at 410-268-7373. For tickets and more information, please visit the website.
