Here’s Part Six of meeting the cast of The Washington Savoyard’s The Rocky Horror Shows. Today: meet Danny Tippett.
My name is Danny Tippett. I appeared most recently in Legally Blonde the Musical at Tobys Dinner Theatre. I have performed at The Kennedy Center, Fords Theatre, Imagination Stage, ATMTC, and Red Branch Theatre.
Why did you want to be part of this production?
Rocky Horror is such a fun show, and to perform in it around Halloween is an amazing experience. The audiences who love the show make it worth while for sure.
Tell us about your role and why you wanted to play the role?
I am one of the Phantoms, as well as the Dance Captain. We are basically Franks “soldiers” we are the Privates if you will in Franks Army. We are there to do basically whatever he needs. We help flush out the musical numbers.
How do you relate to this character?
We are aliens and I’ve always felt a little outside the norm so I guess that’s relatable..?
How did you prepare to play your character?
Lots of dance rehearsals. I am dancing in heels for the first time in my career, so each rehearsal I would wear the heels for two hours at a time.
How has Director Jay Brock help you shape your performance?
He knows what he wants and is able to clearly convey that to all of us, which is great in putting on this show that is very out there.
Have they worked with anyone in the cast before and where and why they enjoy working with them?
This is my first show with everyone in the cast although I’ve known some socially for a couple of years.
What are some of the challenges you experiencing in rehearsals?
Dancing in the heels has been the biggest challenge for me, and also balancing my role as an Ensemble member as well as duties as the Dance Captain. I’ve got to be in the numbers while also watching the others to make sure we’re all doing the number to the highest quality.
Why is Rocky Horror so popular today?
I think people enjoy the campiness of the show and can appreciate that aspect, as well as the audience participation which makes it a group effort.
