THE FIRST COMMISSIONED WORK BY NYC’S JOE’S PUB
Ethan Lipton and his Orchestra’s No Place To Go, the OBIE Award-winning music and timely performance art piece that chronicles the demise of the American workplace through song will be performed at Artisphere on Saturday, December 15th. The performance begins at 8pm in the intimate Dome Theatre. Tickets are $22.00.
Part love letter to his co-workers, part query to the universe, part protest to company and country, Ethan Lipton and his Orchestra’s No Place to Go has the distinction of being the first work commissioned by Joe’s Pub at the Public Theater, NYC. Lipton was commissioned by Joe’s Pub through the National Endowment for the Arts to write No Place to Go.
The songs of Ethan Lipton & His Orchestra are steeped in American traditions of yore—jazz, blues, country, lounge—with modern subjects like internet romance, racism, pets and police. Called the “Best Lounge Act” by New York Magazine, Ethan Lipton & His Orchestra perform music that provides a hilariously cockeyed view of an odd, disjointed age. PopMatters calls Lipton, a “sardonic voice that offers an unlikely kind of comfort against the vagaries of everyday life.” Lipton’s incomparable “orchestra” has perofrmed together for over seven years and includes Eben Levy (guitar; former funk band Chucklehead co-
leader), Ian Riggs (upright bass) and Vito Dieterle (sax).
Ethan Lipton & His Orchestra have released four albums (two studio, two live) and played throughout New York and beyond including at Joe’s Pub, Bryant Park, Celebrate Brooklyn, MASS MoCA, Camden Opera House. They have been featured on radio shows such as “Weekend Edition,” “The World,” and “Soundcheck,” and contributed songs to Clash cover album Sandinista and the film The Shift.
As a performer, Lipton has worked with Laurie Anderson, Matt Berninger of the National, Cynthia Hopkins, Elevator Repair Service and dance company El Gato Teatro. His plays have been seen and heard in New York, LA, Seattle, Edinburgh (Scotland) and Berne (Austria) at theaters including the Public, Lark, 3LD, HERE, the Ohio, New York Stage and Film, Dixon Place, WPA, Complex and Powerhouse, with companies including Clubbed Thumb, Gotham Stage, Buffalo Nights, New Century and Rude Mechanicals. Lipton is a winner of a NYFA grant and a Drama-Logue Award for playwriting. He has been a Kesselring nominee, an O’Neil Conference finalist and a member of the Public Theater’s Emerging Writers Group. He is a 2011 Playwright’s Realm Fellow and a member of the Clubbed Thumb Writers Group.

Admission to Artisphere and its galleries is always free; there is a cost for ticketed events.
