Straight to the Source
In true Dance Exchange form Artistic Director Cassie Meador and Sarah Levitt will be conducting Straight to the Source – a two-day improvised movement workshop at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center’s Kogod Theatre tomorrow and Tuesday, December 10th and 11th from 7-9 PM.
In the first part of the workshop Meador and Levitt will be presenting original material including Meador’s How to Lose a Mountain and Levitt’s Ground Loss. How to Lose a Mountain uncovers the 500-mile walk that Meador and company members took from Washington D.C. to mining sites in West Virginia in Spring 2012. Dance Exchange writes on Meador’s trip, “The physical journey, which began in April and ended in June took her on a path to explore the energy sources that power her home starting at her house in the Takoma neighborhood of Washington, DC and traveling through Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia.” Dance Exchange is sharing and collecting stories about their journey on their project website, which can be viewed here.
Ground Loss is a work-in-progress by Levitt that explores that feeling of total loss of control, when even the ground beneath us proves unreliable.
The second part of Straight to the Source will entail movement participation on the part of dancers and non-dancers alike. This free workshop offers an opportunity for people to bring their individual stories and translate them into movement using text and song through collaboration. Meador and Levitt will be collaborating with participants on the 10th and 11th, and there will be an opportunity to perform the work created on the 11th.
Straight to the Source is an opportunity to experience the collaborative and story-based process from the leaders at Dance Exchange. No dance experience is required, only consistent participation on the 10th and 11th.
