For those that have immersed themselves into the DC theater scene, it doesn’t take long to notice that this city has its own unique voice. Of course we have classic renditions of well-known productions, but there is also an influence from new organizations that are performing original works. DC Women’s Theatre Group (DCWTG) is one of those organizations; however we specifically aim to create a special niche by telling the diverse stories of women. From the very beginning our goal has been to provide an assertive voice for women’s issues through a creative platform. Our organization is a place where anyone can come to further develop their talents in acting, directing, producing, writing, and so much more.
The group which was started October 2011, has had five successful shows, all except one were written in-house. We perform everything from full-length plays to short scenes, and we deeply strive to constantly recruit new talent. Through these productions we have helped to raise awareness and funds for organizations that play a large part in supporting women, including Stop Street Harassment, and the Rape Abuse Incest National Network (RAINN). We strongly believe that we have a responsibility to entertain, educate, and help our surrounding community.
You will be very hard pressed to find a production group comprised of strangers that can come together and complete a show of this magnitude from start to finish. We discuss every aspect of the script, casting, blocking, costumes, lighting, and marketing together. In DC Women’s Theatre Group, each voice counts and has the ability to contribute immensely. “I personally have found working with this group to be very therapeutic. Our group is comprised of both female and male production team members and actors with varying backgrounds that have a passion for the arts. It has not been easy and we have most certainly had our bumps along the way, but we have made a shocking amount of progress in very little time. I consider myself lucky and very fortunate to work with this group,” said DCWTG writer Serina Freeman.
We have a lot of exciting things coming up in 2013! In February: we’re holding a small acting workshop for young girls with George Washington University’s mentoring program POSI+IVI+Y.

On February 22 and 23 at 7:30 pm we will be kicking off our 2013 season at the DC Arts Center with Lost Letters: From the Frontline to the Homefront. This production highlights the struggles, hopes, and unique journeys of female veterans and their families as they recount their experiences in the armed forces. Throughout the play, we take the time to meet these remarkable characters, sharing in their good and bad experiences on the frontline and back on the homefront as they are forced to face situations they never expected.
In the spring we will perform an untitled work by Britches and Hoes director, Arielle Seidman. This fall we will perform Margie a play centered around a 1960’s female writer struggling with bipolar disorder.
