Favorite ‘Scene Stealers’ of the 2012-2013 DC Area Theater Season: Part 6

There were many wonderful Scene Stealing moments on DC Metro Area stages in our professional, community, children’s, and university theaters during the past theater season (August 1, 2012-August 1, 2013). Here’s our sixth set of honorees:

David James as himself singing “Leader of the Pack” in Toby’s of Columbia’s production of Hot Nostalgia: A Toby’s Original Musical Revue.

Ham never came so glazed as David James took the cake, the icing and the whole party with him. Stealing the spotlight from Tina DeSimone during “Leader of the Pack” on his invisible motorbike, his physical shenanigans were to die for. His character appearance as Ringo Starr was also worth note as was his rendition of “Crocodile Rock” which featured him in huge star-shaped Elton John sunglasses. You just couldn’t take your eyes off him.

Santina Maiolatesi as Daniela Singing ‘Carnival Del Barrio’ in In The Heights at Toby’s Dinner Theatre of Columbia.

Sassy and saucy Santina Maiolatesi‘s brilliant vocals stole the scene for “Carnival Del Barrio,” belting mixed with comedy at its finest. And her little line, “…she went to someone else for her extensions and you know what she found in her weave? La cucaracha! A big one! With the wings!” was delivered with her comically over-the-top accent and eas very humorous that you couldn’t help but laugh. She was a blazing pistol and every time she was on the stage the audience loved her.

Lisa Pastella-Young as Mazeppa Grinding and Singing in “You Gotta Get a Gimmick” in Cockpit in Court’s production of Gypsy.

Lisa Pastella-Young put the bump-n-grinding fun into “You Gotta Get a Gimmick.” Belting out her bit and really hamming it up, she owned the role with self-confidence out the wazoo –a  fun character that makes that big signature number in Act II really sparkle with the razzle-dazzle of the lights of Broadway.

Matthew Patrick Quinn as Head Waiter in “A Romantic Atmosphere” in Infinity Theatre Company’s production of She Loves Me.

Playing the epitome of a foppish hoity-toity maitre d’, Matthew Patrick Quinn remained stiffly upright throughout his big moment onstage. A pinched voice with severe annoyance made for a comical rendition of “A Romantic Atmosphere,” and the more seriously he took his job the more hilarious the scene became.

Rick Robertson as Roger Elisabeth DeBris Singing ‘Keep it Gay’ in Silhouette Stage’s production of The Producers.

Rick Robertson glided onto the stage for “Keep It Gay” blowing the audience out of the water with his diva drag queen performance, topping himself later as the flamingly flamboyant Hitler, singing “Springtime For Hitler” with vigorous flare. This leading man was so gay, he nearly flew away! A knock-out scene stealer for sure

Tobias Young Singing “Piragua” in In the Heights at Toby’s Dinner Theatre of Columbia.

Every time Tobias Young sang in In The Heights he was a force of nature. His booming voice crackled with excitement and enthusiasm. His Scene Stealing “Piragua”(and its Reprise) was filled with emotion and energy and made the me and the audience go gaga. I just wanted to run over and get one of those Piraguas so I could make him some money. Tobias’ enthusiasm and beautiful voice was the highlight of the production for me, and I couldn’t wait to congratulate him with this honor here.
