Leading Tony Award Candidates — Musicals
Now that Broadway’s Fall season is over, it is interesting to look at the leading candidates for the 2014 Tony Awards. We’ll look at musicals this week and plays next week, with a maximum of four candidates in each category and presented in alphabetical order.
Musical — After Midnight and A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder.
Revival — Forever Tango (the only revival).
Actor — Eric Anderson (Soul Doctor), Norbert Leo Butz (Big Fish), Jefferson Mays and Bryce Pinkham (A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder).
Actress — Mary Bridget Davies (A Night with Janis Joplin).
Featured Actor — None.
Featured Actress — Amber Iman (Soul Doctor), Adriane Lenox (After Midnight), and Lisa O’Hare (A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder).
Ensemble — A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder and After Midnight.
Revenue records were broken last week: Wicked set the weekly gross for a musical by taking in $3,201,333 (for nine performances) and a record attendance of 17,352 (at $184.49/ticket), breaking its own $2,947,142 (also nine performances). Betrayal set the weekly gross for a play at $1,442,087, surpassing the prior record of $1,412,001 by Lucky Guy.
Openings:
1) Beautiful – The Carole King Story, which chronicles her musical and personal journey from writing tunes for pops songs through her Tapestry album, is in previews and will open January 12.
2) Machinal, which examines the restless and unfulfilled life of a young woman in the “Golden Age” of the 1920′s, is in previews and will open January 16.
