The McLean Community Players (MCP) present La Cage aux Folles, the only musical to win Tony Awards for Best Musical and twice for Best Revival of a Musical, opening on Friday, January 31st  McLean’s Alden Theatre. Veteran director Hans Bachmann leads an award-winning cast and crew for this show, which is considered Jerry Herman’s best. The book is by Harvey Fierstein, with music and lyrics by Jerry Herman (who won Tony Awards), and is based on the play by Jean Poiret.

The plot centers around Georges, the owner of a popular drag nightclub in San Tropez, and Albin, the club’s star, who have lived together in unwedded bliss for twenty years. Jean Michel, the son they have raised together, throws the happy household into hilarious turmoil by announcing that he is going to marry Anne, the daughter of an ultra-conservative politician. The impending visit of Anne’s parents propels everyone into frenzied activity.  La Cage aux Folles features memorable music, including “I Am What I Am.”

About La Cage Director Hans Bachmann says, “La Cage aux Folles, at its heart, is a story about family and the sacrifices that parents make to ensure their children’s happiness. It is what made the original production and the second Broadway revival, almost thirty years later, resonate with critics and a wide range of audiences alike. It is a story most everyone can relate to. I have loved La Cage since the first time I saw it, and I am honored to be given the opportunity to direct this show for MCP—this being only the second community theater production of the show in this area.”

La Cage aux Folles plays from January 31, 2014 through  February 16, 2014 at the McLean Community Center’s Alden Theatre – 1234 Ingleside Avenue, in McLean, VA. Tickets are $18 to $20, and group rates are available. Audio description services for the visually impaired will be offered at the February 15th performance. For more information, call (703) 790.9223 or visit www.McLeanPlayers.org.  Tickets are available at the Alden Box Office, through OvationTix at 1-866-811-4111 or purchase them online. La Cage aux Folles is presented by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc.
