Matt’s Movie Rank Tank – ‘Special Oscar Edition-Part 1: Best Supporting Actor’ by Matt Baughman

 It’s OSCAR season!!!

80th Academy Awards NYC Meet the Oscars Opening

And in honor of this joyous time of year, leading up to the telecast on March 2nd, I will be positing a series of rankings of the nominees for Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Lead Actor, Lead Actress, Best Director, and Best Picture. I will also share my prediction of who will win and who I felt was the biggest snub in each category.

As always, feel free to agree, disagree and/or rank your own nominees in the Comment Box below

______

First up: Best Supporting Actor

(5) Jonah Hill (The Wolf of Wall Street)

I’ve been a fan of Jonah Hill since he was in a little known comedy called Accepted. He was the best part of Wolf of Wall Street and I’m happy that he was nominated. However, was he one of the top 5 supporting actors of the year? That’s debatable

______

(4) Bradley Cooper (American Hustle

A strong performance, indeed. But I think he scored this nomination because he can sport a terrible perm and STILL be a dreamboat. It’s harder than you think.

______

(3) Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips)

First time actor, first time nominee. Talk about beginners luck! No, not exactly. He terrorized one of the nicest actors in Hollywood, yet at times, you wanted to hug him. He also “supported” Tom Hanks in his best performance since Philadelphia. Nomination…deserved.

______

(2) Michael Fassbender (12 Years a Slave)

Woof! Anyone else want to jump on screen and clock him in his bearded face? He was a true villain, despicable in every way. Well done Sir, well done!

______

(1) Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club)

A clear front-runner. It’s a flashy role for sure, but Leto could’ve easily made the drug addicted transsexual Rayon into a characture. Instead, he restrained and delivered a powerful performance that tugged at the heart strings, and added a little comic relief to a movie that desperately needed it.

WHO SHOULD WIN:
Jared Leto

WHO WILL WIN:
Jared Leto

WILD CARD:
Bradley Cooper

_____

BIGGEST SNUB:

Sam Rockwell (The Way Way Back)

THE WAY, WAY BACK

When will he get his just desserts? I can name at least 5 movies he should’ve been nominated for (OK, challenge accepted! Moon, Seven Psychopaths’, Conviction, Confessions of Dangerous Mind, and The Green Mile). I know that the Academy doesn’t really reward comedy, but every time he was on screen, the film popped and the crowd energy rose to level 10. His line delivery was perfection. Comedy is tough Academy!

  1. Having only seen three of these performances, I am not the best person to judge. Having said that, I walked out of the theater knowing that Jared Leto was going to win the Oscar for that performance. He was absolutely amazing! I forgot he was a man half the time!
