Capital Fringe 2014 Preview: ‘C-’ by Eric Jaffe

In 2008, Eric Jaffe set out to track down and interview all of his formerly hard-partying, now middle-aged fraternity brothers to try to answer the question: What is value of a college education?

Sixty-five interviews later, the result is C- a seriocomic look at the value of college, the challenge of choosing a career, and how people’s perspectives change as they age. C- recently premiered at the Rogue Festival in Fresno, California.

Jaffe’s story is one that many people can identify with: a straight and narrow student in high school hits a rebellious streak in college. But how do your choices from then reflect life now?

“I was pulled very strongly in opposite directions in college. Even 25 years later I never stopped thinking about the trade off between the opportunities squandered, and the upside of letting loose and indulging yourself in that way,” said Jaffe.

“Eric Jaffe. He’s a talent. Plain and simple. In addition to some great story telling, Jaffe knows how to be engagingly funny. He commands the stage,” wrote Marc Gonzalez on The Road to 1000.

It took Jaffe four years to develop and write C-. He traveled across the U.S. to interview his former collegiate classmates and fraternity brothers.

“Obviously a good deal of the fraternity antics seem ridiculous in hindsight, but you learn a lot about people when living in a charged environment. You also develop the kind of bonds where you can sit down 20 years later, and talk openly about how life has unfolded,” said Jaffe.
