It’s the Bedroom at Fort Fringe and it’s November and it’s fallFringe and we’re moving and trying to get our stuff out of the way and back into the corner so the venue manager and the bartender can get out of there and enjoy whatever happens to be left of their evening. And it’s just me and Jacy. And I’m Jason and Jacy is my wife and we are Not A Robot Theatre Co.
And we just performed He Smokes With Mirrors and we were lucky because some persons had come to watch and we were even more lucky because one of those persons was Julianne Brienza and she is still here and we are chatting but working and moving but still talking. And she asks us what’s next. What are we going to do in the summer? And we know it’s a play about a girl who is in space. A girl who lives in space and was born in space and doesn’t know that there are any other options other than space. A girl who is raised by a ship and is given everything she needs by a ship and never asks any questions of the ship because she doesn’t know she can ask. A girl who just takes what she is given and just pushes the right buttons on her space console when she is asked to. A girl who is observed by those who pushed the buttons that launched her to her fate. A girl who eats her space cereal while watching cartoons or sitcoms or just the stars on her window-screen. A girl who would soon come to understand that she was alone. Completely alone. Surrounded by nothing but space and metal crafted by hands connected to arms connected to bodies that she would never meet. She is also surrounded by questions. She has so many questions. So it’s a simple coming of age in space story that we were going to make. And we both go to answer but she doesn’t wait. She tells us we should do it in the round and we almost drop whatever it was we were carrying because of course we should. Then she leaves and we sweep up and pack up and talk about it the whole car ride back to the apartment and for the months to come.
So now we invite you to join us on the stage of Atlas-Sprenger for a show we are calling Girl In Space. We will all gather together. There will be no separation between audience and performers. We will all be together. In space. On stage. In a sci-fi theatrical adventure. There will be rock music and stars and black holes and an asteroid and dancing and some puppets and a Girl in Space.
