Big Apple Circus Soars with its Debut of Metamorphosis

Big Apple Circus theatrically unveils its 37th season with the world premiere of Metamorphosis at Dulles Town Center in Sterling, Virginia, transporting ladies and gentlemen, girls and boys to a realm of enchantment and illusion, an intimate dreamscape domain where no one sits more than 50 feet from ringside.

A happy marriage between a traditional circus (think Ringling Bros) and Cirque du Soleil, Big Apple Circus offers a balanced blend of acrobatics, contortionists, jugglers and even rescued animals (minus the elephants, lions and tiger acts that often plague larger, more traditional circuses) underneath a big top with an old-school ringmaster between acts.

Returning as Big Apple Circus director for a second season, West Hyler presents an extraordinary show to entertain audiences of all ages. Showcased by the musical merriment of a charismatic, featured clown, audience members are electrified by the flying trapeze team, the razzle-dazzle of the Rolla-Bolla, the dynamo of the Diablo, the risky rhythms of the Risley team, the cunning conjurors of the Quick-Change and the incredible flexible limbs of the contortionists.

Metamorphosis is a spectacular extravaganza that packs the ring with more thrills, more magic and more animals than ever before. Aerialists swoop and swirl; camels and horses parade and trot; and the beloved and charming Francesco, the clown — amuses, mingles and captivates with his gentle humor. Accompanied by the glorious sounds of the Big Apple Circus Band, the illustrious and incomparable, John Kennedy Kane, the circus’ famed ringmaster, keeps things spirited and well-paced during this wondrous show.

The artistic team, which includes Antoinette DiPietropolo, making her Big Apple Circus debut as choreographer, creatively collaborates to delight the audience with a thrilling, magical production. Tony Award-winning Set Designer, Todd Rosenthal, also helps bring the acts to life with his spellbinding mise-en-scène. Lighting Designer Howell Binkley gives the show its energetic sparkle. Seven-time winner of the MAC Award, Sound Designer JP Perreaux, and Costume Designer Mirena Rada both return to the circus exhibiting their respective skills with versatility and flair. Illusion Designer Jim Steinmeyer also adds a little magic to this masterpiece. Under the direction of maestro Rob Slowik, the Big Apple Circus Band shines, rousing revelers to feel like they can “step riiight up” to the cutting-edge wonders and age-old pleasures of Metamorphosis.
