Meet the Cast of ‘Flyin’ West’ at Bowie Community Theatre: Part 4: Darius McCall

In Part 4 of a series of interviews with the cast and director of Flyin’ West at Bowie Community Theatre, meet Darius McCall.

Darius McCall.
Darius McCall.

Please introduce yourself and tell our readers where they may have seen you in the past year on local stages?

I am the guy who was afraid of a cochlear implant and decided to opt for a hearing aid. A handicapped version of Robin Williams with a mulatto soot as a skin tone is what I usually refer to myself as! Franco Wicks in Superior Donuts at Colonial Players last February, 2014 was my last role where I was nominated for the WATCH Best Lead Actor in a Play Award.

Why did you want to be part of the Bowie Community Theatre’s production of Flyin’ West?

I walked 1.5 hours to the audition and confronted a coyote/wolf along the way, so, I prayed it was worth it!

What did you perform at your audition, and where were you when you got the call that you had the role?

Lancastrian Soldier from the 3rd part of Henry the 6th was my speech. I was rehearsing in my below-freezing apartment when I got the call that I was offered a role.

Who do you play in the show and how do you relate to your character? What do you like about your character?

I play Wil Parrish and we are so much alike because we are sensitive, shy and soft spoken. I like Wil a lot because he is a gentleman and will go to the end of the world to protect the people he loves so dearly. The only thing I do not like is that Wil cannot wear the dainty attire Frank wears. Wil Parrish is my name, looking chic is my game!

How did you prepare for your role and what were the biggest challenges you faced and how did you resolve them?

Coca-Cola, may I get the ingredients for your legendary coke? Please!

What advice and suggestions did your director give you that helped you prepare for your role?

My director was like my psychologist. So, the confidentiality there also applies to her!

What is your favorite scene in the show that you are not in and what is your favorite scene that you are in?

Act I and Act II scenes where I was not in are my favorites. As for me, I have no favorites because they are all great. Ben, Lolita, Brawnlyn, Sandra, Kecia are all awesome to me.

Which character in the show is most like you and why?

Miss Leah is more like me because she has a lot of pain yet masks it with exceptional wit!

What do you admire most about your fellow castmates’ performances?

My castmates were great chemistry-wise. We all give and receive when it comes to our dialogues. Most importantly, we all have fun and get along with each other well on and offstage.

What does this show have to say to today’s audiences?

Do not beat women! Show respect. Think of your mother’s struggles when she was trying to do the best for the family.

What line or lines that someone recites are your favorites and what are your favorite line or line that you recite and why?

Again, I do not have any favorites. Not my type of thing to single out some words. I do have tremendous respect for all the actors, and we all just want to give the best interpretation that Pearl Cleage and our director, Estelle, envisioned.

What do you want audiences to take with them after seeing Flyin’ West?

Do not take personally what Ben exerts through Frank; it’s just a play! Sit back and enjoy the ride, because no Ferris Wheel will do it better.
