In a tiny apartment somewhere near the sea dairy comes on Mondays and staple guns on Sundays. A wheel turns outside the window and a traveling dentist knocks on the door. Two young women who call themselves Raf and Tot invite this stranger in for a drink of vinegar. By the end, two will leave, one will burn and the dog will probably die.
And can you believe it? It’s a love story.
In this Capital Fringe Festival 2015 world premiere, Playwright Casey Bauer examines the challenges of accepting love in today’s society. “We’ve been inundated with images, ideas, reality TV, that condition us to have unrealistic expectations of what love should be,” she explains. Raf and Tot embody two women who have had very different experiences with love. One, burned by love and loss, chooses isolation, physical and emotional. The other, a girl on the brink of womanhood, must reconcile her reality, and the man who has suddenly appeared within it, with the fantastical romantic characters she prefers to imagine.
The abstract and poetic style of Half Past What? complements the highly cinematic and bold concept of Director Jonathan Wong, who adds elements to the story that are anything but expected. They include: a large pink reindeer, piles of confetti, and a retro musical moment. “It’s a dark, comic character study,” says Wong, “focusing on relationships between women and men. It is universal, allegorical, and what is being said is not what is happening.”
Actor Cathryn Benson, coming off of a highly praised performance in God Don’ Like Ugly at Venus Theatre, describes the play as “passionate and melancholy, [it’s] just a beautiful, twisted love story.”
