Round House Theatre Announces its 2016-2017 Season: A Celebration of Tony Kushner

NEW SEASON INCLUDES A CELEBRATION OF TONY KUSHNER, THE LARGEST MUSICAL IN ROUND HOUSE’S HISTORY, THE REGIONAL PREMIERE OF A SOLO SHOW BY AUGUST WILSON

Round House Theatre and Producing Artistic Director Ryan Rilette are thrilled to announce the company’s 2016-2017 Season. The ambitious new season includes a Celebration of Tony Kushner, the largest musical in Round House’s history, and the regional premiere of a solo show by August Wilson. Round House also announces a two-year partnership with Olney Theatre Center to co-produce outstanding repertory plays in Montgomery County, beginning with Tony Kushner’s Angels In America in the fall of 2016. In line with its commitment to lifelong learning, Round House will present the 15th Annual Sarah Metzger Memorial Play performed by the Round House Teen Performance Company.

Round House begins its 2016-2017 Season with the 25th Anniversary production of Tony Kushner’s Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning Angels In America (Sept. 7 – Oct. 30, 2016), presented as a co-production with Olney Theatre Center. Part I: Millennium Approaches and Part II: Perestroika will be presented in rotating repertory at Round House Theater in Bethesda.

The season continues with the rolling world premiere of the Pride and Prejudice-inspired Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley by Lauren Gunderson and Margot Melcon (Nov. 23 – Dec. 18, 2016). Round House continues the Celebration of Tony Kushner with the show-stopping musical Caroline, or Change, with music by Jeanine Tesori and book & lyrics by Kushner (Jan. 25 – Feb 26, 2017).

Next, Round House presents Or, a madcap comedy by Liz Duffy Adams (April 12 – May 2, 2017), and the season ends with the regional premiere of August Wilson’s How I Learned What I Learned, co-conceived by Todd Kreidler (June 7 – July 2, 2017).

“The 2016-2017 Season is without question our biggest, most ambitious season yet,” say Producing Artistic Director Ryan Rilette. “In addition to a new play by August Wilson and two contemporary works by female playwrights, we are thrilled to celebrate America’s most celebrated political playwright, Tony Kushner, on both sides of the presidential election. Angels In America and Caroline, Or Change engage with our political history in a way that is stunningly current and absolutely relevant.”

In partnership with Olney Theatre Center, Round House announces a two-year commitment to co-produce outstanding repertory plays in Montgomery County. The first, Angels In America by Tony Kushner, will be presented in the fall of 2016, with the second at Olney Theatre Center in the fall of 2017. Round House Theatre Producing Artistic Director Ryan Rilette says, “I’ve admired [Olney Theatre Center Artistic Director] Jason Loewith’s work for some time, and we’ve been searching for the perfect project to collaborate on. Our two-year commitment to co-producing ambitious reparatory theatre will highlight artistic excellence in Montgomery County.”

Round House will also present two special events in the 2016-2017 Season. In the summer of 2016, Happenstance Theater will return to Round House to present the newly devised Moxie: A Happenstance Vaudeville (June 24 – July 17, 2016). From March 17 – 19, 2017, the Round House Teen Performance Company will present the 15th Annual Sarah Metzger Memorial Play, Beach Week by Diana Metzger.

 Join us as we present the largest musical in Round House’s history! Set in the heat of the Civil Rights Movement, the Tony-nominated Caroline, Or Change follows a black maid working for a middle-class Jewish family in Louisiana. When a small amount of money goes missing, buried tensions threaten to rip two families—and the struggling Caroline—apart. Loosely based on Kushner’s provocative and personal story, Caroline features a virtuosic score from Jeanine Tesori (Tony Award for Best Original Score for Fun Home) that blends blues, gospel, and traditional Jewish melodies into a magical, show-stopping musical masterpiece.
