The Dolly Rockers are based in the Washington, DC area. Band members are Eric Lynum (vocalist, guitar), Larry D. (guitarist), Megan Strings (violin), Mike Trippi (bass), Derrick Decker (drums), and Loki (didgeridoo, hand drums). I conducted an interview with Eric Lynum about their music, their influences, and their goals.

Marlene: How did you get your name?

Eric: The Dolly Rockers came from a Syd Barrett Song called Dolly Rocker. It actually stands for an old make of a dress.

How would you describe your music?
Our music is a blend of late 60s and early 70’s rock sound with a unique modern creative twist.

When did you form the band?

I decided to put a band together in early 2014 and found Larry, our lead guitarist online and after meeting in a coffee shop, we immediately vibed and started to put together a band together with Mike on bass, Megan on violin and Derrick on drums around the songs that we both were writing.

What are your favorite venues to play in the DC area?

We would all say the Velvet Lounge and a local house party in DC that we played at called the Commune.

What have been some of the highlights of your musical career?

Playing at the Rhode Island Porch Fest in DC was a great experience.

What advice do you have for aspiring musicians?

Keep listening to music and never stop having fun playing and writing music and always appreciate the people who follow, support, and love your music.

What’s unique about playing in the DC area?

It’s basically home to all of us and there’s a lot of great artists here.

How do you write your music?

Larry, Mike, and I write our songs but after we write them it’s an organic creative process with everyone in the Band together.

Who are some of your musical influences?

So many, of course, the Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, The Stooges, Neil Young, Scythian, Wilco, Elliott Smith, Nirvana, Marvin Gaye, T-Rex, David Bowie, Stevie Wonder, Prince, and The Brian Jonestown Massacre.
