2016 Capital Fringe Preview #6: ‘Once Upon a Bedtime’ by Michael Oberhauser

We’re so excited to be back for our third production in the Fringe Festival, and our goal is to keep growing and trying new things. After 2014’s A Fire in Water and 2012’s Fallen Angels, we thought we’d try something a little lighter, so we’re putting on our first children’s show: Once Upon a Bedtime.

Once Upon a Bedtime is actually two pieces: the children’s opera The Goose Girl by Thomas Pasatieri, and new material that frames the opera with original text by Shannon Berry and music by me. This new framing material was originally supposed to be a choreographed dance piece, but due to some unexpected scheduling issues, our choreographer withdrew from the performance.

We found ourselves scrambling to come up with a last minute solution (something that is probably familiar to anyone who’s ever been involved in Fringe!), and we’re excited with how it worked out! We’re thrilled to welcome aboard two extremely talented actors to our project.

This framing material tells the story of a little girl getting ready for bed. Her mother reads her a bedtime story, The Goose Girl, which is the story of a princess’s magical adventure with her talking horse. After the story, the girl is finally ready to go to sleep.

The Goose Girl is based on a Grimm’s fairy tale, and is full of magic, bubbles, and cookies. We’re all having so much fun in rehearsals, and we know the audience will have fun, too.

We at Silver Finch wanted to reach out to a younger audience this time because we feel that children are natural arts lovers with their open minds and sense of wonder. As Picasso said, “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.” We at Silver Finch never grew up, and we get to play every day. We want to share the love of what we do with everyone else.

Our fantastic team includes a few familiar faces for Silver Finch, plus some newcomers:
