How To Be The Perfect Wingwoman is a new musical about the frustrations and hilariousness of modern dating. Let’s face it – it can suck! Somehow, yet another friend is getting married or having a baby. Jazelle and her best guy friend Josh (who friendzoned her years ago) go to an old bookstore and stumble upon a book titled How To Be the Perfect Wingwoman from the 50s, about helping your friends find love through “wingwomaning.” What is a girl and her friends to do but test it out? That’s right! When out on the town women need wingwomen too!
The world premiere will be at the Capital Fringe Festival. This is the first time Golden Ginger Productions is participating in The Capital Fringe Festival. We are theater lovers who make time for theater in the free time we creatively create. We know that people have many different passions and commitments, but we try to find ways to keep our artistic spirits alive. In fact, the playwright, is a recent law school graduate studying for the DC bar exam!
Note From the Playwright: The Muses Behind the Wingwoman Musical
This play was inspired by my amazing wingwomen after a hilarious wingwoman plot victory, which happened after we saw a Capital Fringe performance last summer.
What was the wingwoman plot you ask?
Great question! Well, naturally one of my friends liked a guy (let’s call him Steve, or this will get really confusing), but he had a very bromancy friend (let’s call him Bob) who was always occupying his attention, so it was very hard to talk to him. The 3 of us had been talking to another Fringe playwright (let’s call him Joe), when Steve and Bob walked by. Like instinct, one of my wingwomen pulled Joe away started talking to him about a whole new topic, pushed me into Bob where I immediately started distracting him, allowing our friend to talk to her crush Steve in peace. And that’s what we call a wingwoman victory! So our friend with the crush had no idea we did this until we told her. While enjoying our wingwomanly glory we said aloud, “wouldn’t it be funny if someone wrote a play on wingwomaning?” Then, after a few minutes I said, “Wait a second, I’m a playwright, I can write the play on wingwomaning. In that instant, I began writing ideas into the notepad app of my phone. Seven months later, the script was complete!
So, the wingwomaning advice from the book stems from real life experiences and stories I’ve heard. I hope at least a piece of each audience member can relate to a character or their circumstances. I’d also love it if audience members bond with our characters in a way where they would feel comfortable yelling at for all of the mistakes they make in their journey to find love, or a good time (no judgements).
We have an amazingly talented cast, director, musical director, and composer. I feel like a little kid going to a candy store when I peak in at rehearsal to see blocking and hear songs being rehearsed. Their photos are below.
