2016 Capital Fringe: Preview #7: ’35mm: A Musical Exhibition’ by Rich Farella

35mm: A Musical Exhibition is a song cycle where each song is inspired by a photograph or set of photographs. The show has no formal plot or dialogue; however, each song/photo is curated – connected in theme and style like individual paintings in an art gallery.Ā  35mm was written by Ryan Scott Oliver, a NY based composer recently called ā€œthe future of Broadwayā€ by Entertainment Weekly, with photos by his husband Matthew Murphy.

This show explores a wide variety of themes and theatrical styles. Styles range from a power ballad about a sociopathic prom queen to what the composer calls a ā€œgay jazzā€ number about the shortcomings of modern art.Ā Ā  An eclectic combination of imaginative fantasy numbers, rocking anthems and hysterical ditties explore love and loss, the trials of adolescence, joy and heartbreak, exemplifying the extreme scope of musical theater as an art form. All the while, 35mm uniquely integrates two mediums; musical theater and photography. The themes and tone of each song are expressed through both sources for maximum impact and a unique twist to both art forms. There is truly something for everyone in this show.

We are excited to bring this thrilling and innovative collision of artistic genres to the fringe for its DC premiere!
