Ellouise Schoettler is very excited to be returning to Cap Fringe 2016, for the seventh year. This year she is performing the premiere of Ready to Serve at Caos on F.
Ready to Serve: Unknown Stories of WWI Nurses is the second play of a WWI Lost History trilogy. The first of the trilogy, The Hello Girls, a popular 5-star program introduced at the Capital Fringe in 2014, has been performed across the United States since, including the National World War I Museum and Memorial in Kansas City, MO.
Schoettler tells everyone that as a resident of the Metropolitan DC area, it is always a pleasure to perform at home. She says, “I consider the Fringe a great venue to premiere new work.”
Ready to Serve is a new one-woman show enriched by letters World War I nurses sent home from France. “I may forget their names,” writes one nurse, “but I will always remember the faces of those brave lads.”

While this program celebrates all nurses who served overseas, the program focuses significantly on the 64 graduates of the Hopkins School of Nursing who accompanied the first American Army troops we sent to France. This is a group Schoettler first learned about when she was a first year nursing student at Hopkins, back in 1954.
Schoettler explains: “The winters of 1917 and 1918 were punishing, freezing medicines, increasing casualties home, their stories remained unknown… until now.” If you don’t know the stories of our WWI nurses in France,this is your chance.
Maryland spoken–word–artist Ellouise Schoettler seeks stories of unknown women, bringing them to life with “heart and humor.”
Explains Schoettler, who turns 80 on July 14th: “This story will be 100 years old in 2017. It’s more than time to give these women a voice. I can’t think of a better way to begin to celebrate the World War I Centennial!”
Schoettler, who dropped out of nursing school after marrying a young Hopkins Medical student, returned to college in her 30s to earn a BA in Fine Arts and an MFA in Painting. A longtime working artist, she began her storytelling career 30 years ago and continues to perform nationwide for adult and family audiences. She is also a host and performer on two local MMCTV cable programs.
