181 school shootings have occurred in the United States since the Columbine shooting on April 20, 1999. 231 young people died from gun violence in their place of education.
High school students Macbeth, Lady M, Duncan, Malcolm, and Kevin (Macduff) live in a world of gun violence, Trump, and the aftermath of 9/11. By combining the language of Shakespeare’s Macbeth and original text by playwright Annie Bryan, we devised a production to tell the stories of these young Americans trying desperately to survive today.
Caldwell High School is dangerously familiar. What does it mean for our freedom and our lives that violence tragically infiltrates the spaces we consider safe?
ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT: Annie Bryan
Annie Bryan is a 20-year-old writer based in New York City. She grew up in the DC area and now studies Creative Writing at Columbia University. This is her first play, though she has written nonfiction pieces on gun violence before.
