Capital Fringe Preview #31:’Oral Histories’ by Ward Kay

Sometimes it starts with the title. While taking a graduate research class on qualitative methods, playwright Ward Kay learned about oral histories and thought “That would make a great title!”

He already had written a monologue with the opening line “A blow job saved my life.” To complement the existing monologue, he wrote two additional stories. Each story starts with a provocative line about oral sex: “Getting head made me rich” and “I found Jesus through oral sex.” From there, each character tells his or her story – sometimes funny, sometimes moving, always intriguing.

A Hostess greets the audience and introduces the characters. She also breaks up the story-telling with a food show called Eros-trophy (Food of Love). The Hostess is played by the author’s college-age daughter Allie Kay.

Each of the actors reflects on their stories. Terry Loveman who plays William (made me rich) found that as he read the script, “I was both alarmed and intrigued that porn has been the catalyst for much of the internet’s commercial success.”

Samantha Sheahan who plays Lisa who found Jesus thinks, “This show finds the sacred through the profane and provokes us to recognize that the profane can be a doorway to what is most central and elevated in us.”

Steve Rosenthal who plays Ed whose life was saved by a questionable act in his past, “Is finding it interesting meeting the challenge of playing a character who brags about his sexual exploits yet at the same time tries to come to terms with an act that he regrets but one that led to his survival.”

The play is being performed at Caos on F.

There is no nudity in this production but there is profanity and the subject matter makes this an adult-only show.
