Strength is the first word that comes to mind as the lights come up at the beginning of fusiondance’s production of BECOMING. The dancers are all women, and their strength is particularly refreshing when juxtaposed with the inherent grace of contemporary dance.
BECOMING is choreographed primarily by Artistic Director Candra Preshong, with additional choreography by Shelley Siller and the company. BECOMING is composed of eight standalone pieces that use the idea of growth as a theme. Pershong’s choreography has a modern base which she infuses with elements of jazz, ballet, hip hop, acrobatics, and contact improvisation. She has a talent for creating interesting visuals through the unique positioning of dancers bodies in relation to each other. These visuals are further enhanced by Helen Garcia-Alton’s lighting, which makes the dancers seem to glow as they move through space.
The first number “The Constant” is particularly stunning, followed by several equally impressive pieces. During these beginning numbers the choreography, which requires incredible strength and control, was perfectly and precisely executed.
Pershong has assembled a company of undeniably talented dancers. This company is currently doing its own “becoming,” and it’s definitely one to keep on your watch list.

I was amazed by the strength and grace of each dancer coming together to create interesting visuals that left me wanting more. The music choices were intoxicating. I want to see it again.
