2016 Capital Fringe Review: ‘Adolescence 2.0’

Dixie Lee Mills takes the stage at the extremely tight quarters of upstairs at The Argonaut Tavern on H Street NE. The first words that come out of her mouth: “So I was at my yearly check up….” and that’s when I thought, “Oh, dear.” She just dove right in. No testing the waters. No dipping feet in first. We cannonballed right off the side and into the deep end and had a good ol’ time.

In her 60-minute comedy act Adolescence 2.0, Dixie details her experiences with weight loss, marriage, dating, shaving, and masturbation. She’s crude, vulgar, and darn it if she isn’t a very charming lady. Yes, the show is funny, but there are also some nice poignant moments in the act too. She gives us insight to her failed marriage and her relationship with her deceased father that were very nice moments. Of course, once that was over then it was right back to talking about her vagina.

My one complaint would be that it sometimes it felt a little too rehearsed. It felt that she wasn’t really connecting with the audience and was just saying lines. And while the jokes were funny, the act didn’t always feel organic.

Dixie’s comedy is not for the faint of heart. She talks about her vagina….a lot. She talks about sex….a lot. If that kind of talk offends you, perhaps her act won’t be for you. But if you want a night of good laughs with a charming performer, don’t miss Adolescence 2.0.

Running time: Approximately 60 minutes, with no intermission.

Adolescence 2.0 is playing through Sunday, July 17, 2016, upstairs at the Argonaut Tavern – 1433 H Street NE, in Washington DC. For tickets, call (866) 811-4111, or purchase them online.
