Meet the Cast of Hard Bargain’s ‘Radio Golf’: Part 3: DeJeanette Horne

In Part 3 of interviews with the cast of Hard Bargain Players’ Radio Golf, meet DeJeanette Horne.

Joel: Please tell our readers where they may have seen you appear on our local stages and the roles you have played.

DeJeanette Horne.
DeJeanette Horne.

DeJeanette: I’ve appeared at 1st Stage of Tysons in: Harvey and One Man Two Guvnors; at Constellation Theater in:  The Fire and The Rain; and at Port City Playhouse in: Blues for an Alabama Sky and The Soul Collector.

Why did you want to appear in Radio Golf?

Radio Golf is a great play with a lot of great characters. It’s an August Wilson play. This kind of an opportunity does not come along often…  The list goes on…

Have you ever appeared in a Radio Golf production or any other August Wilson plays? Who did you play?

This is my first appearance in an August Wilson play.

How would you describe an August Wilson play?

I would describe it as “Real Talk.” August Wilson allows us to explore different perspectives of life as Black men. The imagery is powerful. The words are heartwarming. The Art is necessary.

Who are you playing and how do you relate to your character? Have you brought any personal experiences to your performance?

I am playing Harmond. I believe that both Harmond and I share a love for family. We both love the same woman (wink) [DJ’s real life wife, Lolita Marie, plays his wife Mame in the play]. Both Harmond and I believe in following our own path/plan.

How has Director Terry Spann helped you to mold your performance? What challenges have you had preparing for your role and how did your director help you with these challenges?

Directory “T” allowed us to explore and discover at our own pace. Some of us took a little more time than others… (I’m not going to say that it was me.) I think one of the biggest challenges for me was to not make Harmond a caricature. Harmond is a very real person. Terry allowed us the space to organically discover our characters.

What have you learned about yourself as an actor during this process?

I’m working at the “Theater in the Woods” I love acting. I am enjoying working with creative people and my cast mates are beyond talented. I would also say that I have learned that I must be patient with myself.

What does Radio Golf have to say to today’s audiences?

Love life… Love self… Love family… Love community…  Hard work and perseverance will never go out of style. It only takes “one” to spark awareness and eventually change…

What has your Hard Bargain experience been like and what do you admire most about your fellow cast members’ performances?

It’s been long… I admire their hard work, talent, and commitment. The experience has been rejuvenating. To work with so many people that are willing to dedicate the time required to produce a show of this caliber is amazing.

What do you want audiences to take with them after
seeing Radio Golf?

You are valuable. Do not be afraid to follow your own plan.

Running Time: Two hours and 30 minutes, with a 10-minute intermission.
