In Part 4 of a series of interviews with the cast of The Montgomery Playhouse’s Postmortem, meet Carole Preston.
Joel: Please introduce yourself and tell our readers where they may have seen you perform before on local stages.
Carole: My name is Carole Preston. I was last seen as Marie in Calendar Girls with the McLean Community Players. I have also done shows with Vienna Theatre Co., Silver Spring Stage, Vpstart Crow, Chevy Chase Players, British Players, Reston Players, Cedar Lane Stage. I’m excited to be working with Montgomery Playhouse for the first time.
Why did you want to become a member of the cast of Postmortem?
I decided to audition for Postmortem after reading the script. I thought it had well developed characters and an interesting plot with lots of suspense. It also had a character in my age range.
Who do you play in the show and how do you relate to this character?
I play Aunt Lilly Warner. Lilly is the gracious hostess and “Grand Dame” of Gillette Castle. I only dream of having that talent and a castle!
What were some of the challenges you faced while learning your role and how did Director Loretto McNally help you with these challenges?
Loretto has been wonderful about asking questions that helped me come to my own conclusions about my character. That was extremely helpful when it came to finding the many layers of Lilly.
What does Postmortem have to say to today’s audiences?
I think audiences always enjoy a good mystery and Postmortem has lots of twists and turns as well as humorous moments
What were some of the challenges you faced while learning your role and how did Director Loretto McNally help you with these challenges?
Lilly is more outgoing and confident than I am, but she has a deep love for her family and I can certainly relate to that. Also, she wants to see everyone she loves happy and taken care of in the way she sees fit. I’m afraid I’m guilty of that, too!
Which character is most like you and why and how?
In some ways I’m most like Leo. We’re both quiet and sometimes fade into the background when around people who have very outgoing personalities.
What are your favorite lines that you recite and your favorite lines that other characters recite in Postmortem?
I think my favorite line is when I say to Gilllette “I didn’t change your filthy diapers for nothing!”
What are you performing on the stage after Postmortem?
As of now, I don’t have a show to go to when Postmortem ends, but I hope that changes soon!
What do you want audience members to take away with them after seeing you perform in Postmortem?
Mainly, I want our audiences to have fun and enjoy themselves.
