Barbra comes to BlackRock with Signature Theatre Cabaret’s Streisand Songbook

BlackRock Center for the Arts officially kicks off its versatile 2018-19 season with Streisand Songbook, from the Tony-Award-winning production company, Signature Theatre. This will be the unveiling of BlackRock’s new series, “Signature Theatre Cabaret,” which will import three stellar offerings from the Shirlington-based professional theater.

In a celebration of the best-selling female artist of all time, Signature Theatre salutes the eight-time Grammy Award-winning Barbra Streisand by performing from her catalog of classics including “People,” “Don’t Rain on My Parade,” and “Evergreen.” As one of the few entertainers to be honored with an EGOT – Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Awards – Streisand has seen success in almost every facet of the music and entertainment industry throughout her unmatched, six-decade-long career.

Homegrown supernovas Shayna Blass and Awa Sal Secka will enthrall audiences ala Babs in this musical hit parade, originally produced by the Arlington troupe known worldwide for musicals and new plays, Signature Theatre. Through the imaginative directing eye of their Associate Artistic Director Matthew Gardiner, the ladies showcased their great talents before sold-out houses in last year’s original presentation.

“I’ve been a longtime fan of Shayna Blass and Awa Sal Secka, having met them while they were still students – Awa was only 15! – but, even then, I knew these women were going places.  I caught the original Signature Theatre run and was surprised beyond my expectations. These two smarties, with seemingly different talents from very different backgrounds, found an exciting way to weave an extraordinary evening saluting Streisand, still emerging as the blazing originals they both are. When I came to Black Rock, I knew we had to have them here,” said Brad Watkins, Programming and Internal Affairs Director of BlackRock Center for the Arts.
