“We call on theaters to #OpenYourLobby in support of protestors,” said the impassioned post on social media.
Do not equate the property violence of protestors to the massive, state-sanctioned violence of policing in America. There is no comparison. Things can be replaced, people cannot.
We urge you to follow these action steps:
OPEN LOBBY DOORS: Open your space, provide a place of rest, and distribute free supplies to protestors as needed, including water, snacks and first aid.
Supplies at Arena Stage.
PROVIDE SERVICES: Space permitting, provide bathroom access as well as Wi-Fi and outlets for charging phones, adhering as much as possible to social distancing and providing hand sanitizer for anyone entering the building.
DO NOT PERMIT POLICE: Publicly announce you will not permit police inside the building for the safety of your protestors….
In response, six DC theaters—till now closed by COVID-19—announced that their lobbies will be open this weekend, June 5 to 7, 2020. (Click on each theater’s street address for its Google map. Last update: June 5, 12:15 p.m.)
Arena Stage: Friday, June 5, and Saturday, June 6, from noon to 5 p.m.
Our lobby (1101 6th St. SW, D.C.) will be open today and tomorrow (6/5 and 6/6) from 12 – 5 p.m. for protesters. We have water, snacks and restrooms will be available. Staff will be on hand to maintain safety guidelines and ensure social distancing.
Keegan Theatre: Saturday, June 6, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
In support of #blacklivesmatter and in response to #openyourlobby, this Saturday, June 6 from 4:00-8:00 pm, we’re making the Keegan lobby and restrooms available as a resource and safe facility for anyone attending rallies in the Dupont Circle area.
• Masks are required (Keegan can provide if you need one)
• Water will be available until supplies are exhausted
• Keegan staff will be onsite to maintain social distancing
• Per DC restrictions, occupancy is limited to 10 visitors at a time

Shakespeare Theatre Company: Saturday, June 6, and Sunday, June 7, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Shakespeare Theatre Company supports those protesting in Washington, D.C. for Black Lives Matter, for justice, for equality, and for civil rights. The Michael R. Klein Theatre at the Lansburgh will be open Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. as a resource for protesters offering water, snacks, bathrooms, WiFi, charging stations, first aid, and A/C. We encourage anyone who needs a safe indoor place off the streets to regroup to come to our space.
We ask that all entrants wear a mask and adhere to social distancing guidelines and be respectful of each other’s needs. STC staff will be on hand to help facilitate social distancing and keep the spaces cleaned and sanitized.
The Michael R. Klein Theatre at the Lansburgh is located in the Penn Quarter/Chinatown neighborhood at 450 7th Street NW, Washington, DC 20001 near the intersection of 7th Street NW and E Street NW….

We are open at 1835 14th St NW! CulturalDC, along with our residents Constellation Theatre Company, In Series, and Washington Improv Theater, are happy to open our Source Theatre to help protesters. We’ll be open: Saturday, June 6 and Sunday, June 7 from 12pm-6pm. We will have water, snacks and access to bathrooms.
We ask that all folks wear masks and observe social distancing. We want to encourage people’s health and safety as much as possible. Due to the size of our lobby … we can only accommodate a limited number of folks inside the space at one time. We’re more of “The Pit-Stop on 14th” – grab your sustenance, hit the restroom, and get back out to the marching!
