How to join the ‘Hamilton’ revolution

Founding Father Alexander Hamilton (ca. 1757-1804) was a key figure in the American Revolution, so it’s only fitting that the stage musical Hamilton by Lin-Manuel Miranda (book, music, and lyrics) would have created a new revolution on Broadway with its innovative synthesis of American history then and now. Based on Ron Chernow’s 2004 biography of the first US Secretary of the Treasury, Miranda re-envisioned his mostly sung- and rapped-through story using hip-hop and other present-day genres of music, diverse casting of the real-life white historical characters, and a focus on the relevant socio-political issues of his era and ours.

Since its sold-out multiple award-winning Off-Broadway premiere at The Public Theater in February 2015, through its Broadway transfer to the Richard Rodgers Theatre that same summer, the show, directed by Thomas Kail and choreographed by Andy Blankenbuehler, has deservedly reached the heights of critical acclaim, ticket sales, and Tony Awards (with a record-breaking sixteen nominations and eleven wins), in addition to being honored with the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2016. If you weren’t able to score an in-demand ticket to the theater or to win the production’s daily $10 lottery, you will now be able to watch it at home beginning on Friday, July 3, at 3 am EDT, streaming on the Disney + channel.

Professionally filmed at the Richard Rodgers Theatre during three live performances in 2016, the movie features the original Broadway cast (Emmy, Grammy, and Tony Award winner Lin-Manuel Miranda as Alexander Hamilton; Daveed Diggs as Marquis de Lafayette/Thomas Jefferson; Renée Elise Goldsberry as Angelica Schuyler; Leslie Odom, Jr. as Aaron Burr; Christopher Jackson as George Washington; Jonathan Groff as King George; Phillipa Soo as Eliza Hamilton; Jasmine Cephas Jones as Peggy Schuyler/Maria Reynolds; Okieriete Onaodowan as Hercules Mulligan/James Madison; and Anthony Ramos as John Laurens/Philip Hamilton) and ensemble (Carleigh Bettiol, Ariana DeBose, Hope Easterbrook, Sydney James Harcourt, Sasha Hutchings, Thayne Jasperson, Elizabeth Judd, Jon Rua, Austin Smith, Seth Stewart, and Ephraim Sykes). All were “live-captured” in “the room where it happened,” two weeks before the celebrated stars left the premiere Broadway production.

Hamilton will be available on Disney + through ad-free streaming service on mobile devices, web browsers, game consoles, set-top boxes, and smart TVs. Subscriptions to Disney + cost $6.99/month or $69.99/year (paid in full in advance). This is one show that is well-worth the cost of admission at any price, so “I am not throwing away my shot” to see it again, and neither should you.
