Jade Jones as rapper “Litty Official” debuts hip-hop mixtape

The acclaimed musical theater performer creates a mixtape for the moment.

DMV rapper “Litty Official” releases their mixtape He Could Never on Spotify, Soundcloud, and iTunes. Jade Jones, the artist behind Litty, has crafted a standout lo-fi trap mixtape for the moment with clever lyrics and laid-back beats. Accompanying the release is a listening party August 8, 2020, hosted and live-streamed by Songbyrd Music House and Record Cafe.

Jade Jones as “Litty Official”

Jones, born and raised in the DMV area, has been a fixture on the DC musical theater stage, starring in The Wiz, Sweeney Todd, Into the Woods, and The Amen Corner. Her voice was most recently heard at Black Lives Matter protests in downtown Washington, singing “Lift Every Voice and Sing” for a crowd at the Capitol in June. With new projects indefinitely on hold in COVID-19 limbo, Jones put her considerable talents and “Fresh, Black, and Loc’d” Litty Official persona together to create a banger of a first mixtape—written, recorded, and produced in her bedroom during quarantine.

Litty Official is joyfully, confidently queer throughout her five debut tracks on He Could Never, rapping “when I was 14 I was straight / then I turned into a ladykiller” on “Hollywood,” mixing smooth lines with the pitch-perfect vocals fans expect. “Aubrey” takes a more reflective tone as Jones turns to the compounding tragedies of our current moment—singing as a Black woman in America about persistent racist violence and COVID-19—and shouting out her mother, father, and essential care workers while taking a hopeful look to the future. “Cocoa” shows off Litty’s tongue-twisting skills with some of the mixtape’s best bars over a chilled-out beat, reminiscent of Queen Latifah, Biggie Smalls, or the delicate seduction of The Internet’s “Special Affair.”

Proving her infinite talents, Jones has already released the mixtape’s debut video for “Say Nuthin.” Directed and produced by Christopher Mueller, the video was shot on location in DC and is available to stream on Instagram, YouTube , and Facebook.

Catch the listening party for He Could Never at 8PM EST. More information can be found on Litty Official’s website.
