Nominations announced for the 2020 Tony Awards

Today at noon on YouTube, nominations for this year’s 74th annual Tony Awards were announced to honor outstanding achievements in the 2019-20 Broadway season, cut short by the precautionary closure of all theaters on March 12, as necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, the number of shows eligible for 2020 Tony consideration was limited to the eighteen that had opened and could accommodate nominators and voters to adjudicate prior to the shutdown (with the official cut-off date set at February 19, 2020), thereby postponing eligibility for all productions scheduled to open in the Spring, and a few that were already playing (West Side Story and Girl from the North Country both opened before March 12, and SIX was set to open that night).

Presented by The Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing, the nominations in 25 categories were announced virtually by Tony-winning actor James Monroe Iglehart (Aladdin). In the lead with fifteen nominations is the musical Jagged Little Pill, based on Alanis Morissette’s eponymous album of 1995. Absent from the usual categories was Best Revival of a Musical, with no eligible productions in this curtailed season.
