A live talk on his new book ‘In the Heights: Finding Home’ with Lin-Manuel Miranda

As part of the series Live Talks Los Angeles, Stellar is streaming An Evening with Lin-Manuel Miranda, Quiara Alegría Hudes & Jeremy McCarter on Wednesday, July 21, beginning at 9 pm EST (6 pm PST). The virtual event will feature Miranda discussing the new book, In the Heights: Finding Home (Random House, June 15, 2021), the highly anticipated follow-up to his bestseller Hamilton: The Revolution.

The multi-award-winning composer, lyricist, and performer will be joined online by the book’s co-author Jeremy McCarter and Quiara Alegría Hudes, the Pulitzer Prize-winning librettist of the eponymous Broadway musical and screenwriter of the Warner Bros. film adaptation, released in cinemas and on HBO Max on June 18. Listeners can expect the trio to do more than trace the making of the extraordinary Broadway smash and the subsequent blockbuster movie; they’ll give a personal inside look at the decades-long creative process and life of In the Heights.

In 2008, In the Heights – a new musical from up-and-coming young artists and Miranda’s breakout Broadway debut – electrified audiences with a vibrant mix of Latin music and hip-hop that captured life in the Upper Manhattan Latino neighborhood of Washington Heights. It won four Tony Awards and became an international sensation. For this year’s movie version, director Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians) brought the story home, filming its spectacular dance numbers on location in Washington Heights, where the characters chase their dreams and ask the question, Where do I belong?

As with Hamilton: The Revolution, the current book offers untold stories, perceptive essays, and the lyrics to Miranda’s songs, complete with his funny and heartfelt annotations. It also features newly commissioned portraits and never-before-seen photos from backstage, the movie set, and productions around the world.

“For 20 years, In The Heights – a show about a community – somehow manages to create camaraderie and community every time it is performed,” said Miranda. “This book is a collective diary looking back and shining a spotlight on the people and moments that have nurtured the journey and evolution of this show with paciencia y fe for – checks notes – LITERALLY half of my life. Quiara and I are so grateful that the hundreds of stories and recuerdos that make up In The Heights are collected here.”
