Disney on Broadway returns live this weekend

In advance of the return of its popular musicals to theaters this fall, Disney on Broadway presents Live at the New Am – a concert to benefit The Actors Fund and to celebrate the reopening of Broadway and 42nd Street’s historic New Amsterdam Theatre.

For four performances only, July 22-25, Broadway stars Ashley Brown (Mary Poppins), Michael James Scott (Aladdin), Kissy Simmons (The Lion King), and Josh Strickland (Tarzan) will perform a set of such beloved classics from Disney on Broadway as “Circle of Life” (from The Lion King), “A Whole New World” (Aladdin), and “Let It Go” (Frozen).

For tickets to Live at the New Am (priced at $79.50-99.50), go online.

It has already been announced that The Lion King will resume performances at the Minskoff Theatre on Tuesday, September 14; Aladdin will follow on Tuesday, September 28, at the New Amsterdam. To welcome audiences back, Disney is offering a “Double the Magic” discount for theatergoers to purchase tickets to both shows for one special price, beginning at $149. Frozen, which played at the St. James Theatre from 2018-20, will not be returning to Broadway, but can be seen at venues throughout the country on its National Tour.

And Disney fans who can’t make it to the theater for this weekend’s celebratory concert have something else to look forward to later this year. Walt Disney Animation Studios’ all-new original film Encanto is set to be released in cinemas on November 24. It tells the wondrous tale of the Madrigal family, who live hidden in the mountains of Columbia, in a magical house in the charmed locale of the title.

Featuring the voice of Stephanie Beatriz as the funny and loving Mirabel – an ordinary fifteen-year-old struggling to find her place within the enchanted family – the soundtrack includes original songs in Spanish and English written by Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton; In the Heights).
