Helen Hayes–nominated We Happy Few (LOVERS’ VOWS, 2019) begins its 2021–2022 season with a return of their acclaimed horror audio dramas, this time featuring another story from horror master Edgar Allan Poe and an adaptation from the hugely influential Charlotte Perkins Gilman.
A Midnight Dreary Episode 3: Etched in the Wall is composed of two stories. The first, Poe’s The Black Cat, describes a man driven by strange impulses and cruel obsessions, and the tragic consequences of his inscrutable urges. The second, Gilman’s famous The Yellow Wallpaper, is the story of a woman desperate for an escape from her thoughts but confined and all but abandoned in a hideous cell “for her health,” and the lengths her mind goes to find a way out.
In addition to the recordings, We Happy Few will offer an optional “extras” box containing atmospheric, historic, and story-specific elements delivered to the listener’s door. The extras are designed to heighten the home theatrical experience and encourage listeners to enjoy this event at home with family, friends, or roommates.

ABOUT WE HAPPY FEW
We Happy Few was founded in 2012 with a mission to transform the experience of classic texts for artist and audience. We Happy Few has established itself as one of Washington DC’s best small theater companies (the DCist, 2015) by nurturing a creative environment that thrives on ensemble collaborations with some of the nation’s most promising emerging theater artists. WHF’s flagship production of a six actor, 90-minute HAMLET premiered at the 2012 Capital Fringe Festival to great acclaim, exploring the idea that the entire play unfolded in the title character’s mind. WHF’s 2017 production of HENRY V was hailed as “a fascinating, resonant, and important new take on a known work” (Broadway World). We Happy Few earned its first Helen Hayes Recommendation with 2018’s PERICLES and its first two Helen Hayes nominations for 2019’s LOVERS’ VOWS. DC Theater Arts declared We Happy Few’s work “a new approach to Shakespeare you will not want to miss.”
