‘Macbeth’ as movie to screen at Shakespeare Theatre Company

Filmed version of sold-out production to play at Harman Hall starting May 17.

Shakespeare Theatre Company has announced screening dates for the film version of its landmark production of Macbeth, starring Ralph Fiennes and Indira Varma. The cinematic version of the production, directed by STC Artistic Director Simon Godwin, was filmed live in London at Dock X before it arrived at its current space at 1301 W Street NE in Washington, DC.

The film will have its world premiere screening at the Regal Gallery Place Chinatown on Sunday, April 28, hosted by STC. This premiere is an invitation-only event leading up to the film’s international release on May 2. Local screenings will follow the premiere, beginning May 17 at Harman Hall.

The event production, which played to sold-out houses in Liverpool, Edinburgh, London, and Washington, DC, completes its theatrical run with Shakespeare Theatre Company on Sunday, May 5. Critics have raved about the production, calling it “Devastatingly of our time…. Directed with finesse by Shakespeare Theatre Company’s artistic director Simon Godwin” (The Washington Post). The Wall Street Journal proclaimed it a “chilling” and “stunningly good production.”

Now, the filmed version gives audiences who missed the show a chance to catch it. In addition to the public screenings, multiple student matinee screenings will be offered for DC-area schools.

The public screenings are currently scheduled for:

  • Friday, May 17 at 7:30pm
  • Saturday, May 18 at 2pm, 7:30pm
  • Sunday, May 19 at 2pm*

*Additional times and screenings may be announced.

Tickets for the screenings are $10 for subscribers, $15 for nonsubscribers, and are currently on sale at ShakespeareTheatre.org.

Theater fans looking to see the show live through May 5 can still enter the daily lottery via TodayTix for a chance to score $20 tickets to each performance.

The filmed production is presented by Trafalgar Releasing, in partnership with Wessex Grove and Underbelly.
