Get in on the ground level and see the creative process in action. Featuring new plays and musicals by local and national artists, here are the upcoming play readings and workshops in the DMV.

JULY

Montgomery College presents In the Heights as part of its 47th year of summer dinner theater! Performances are Friday, July 19 through Sunday, July 28 at Montgomery College’s Rockville Campus, Theatre Arts Building, 51 Mannakee St, Rockville, MD. Showtimes are 8:00 PM (6:00 PM buffet dinner) Fridays and Saturdays and 2:00 PM (12:00 PM buffet lunch) Sunday. Tickets are $69 for buffet and show, $25 show only, and available here.

NextStop Theatre Company presents Joe Iconis Live, Monday, July 15 at 8:00 PM at NextStop Theatre, 269 Sunset Park Dr, Herndon, VA. Iconis, the Tony-nominated composer and lyricist of the cult hit musical Be More Chill, will perform his solo cabaret, filled with original tunes, brand new material from shows in the works, explosive singalongs, and a whole lot of banging on the ol’ piano, in NextStop’s black box. ARTfactory’s Prime Time Players present Potato Gumbo by Jean Ciampi, Friday, July 12 through Sunday, July 14 at ARTfactory’s Wind River Theater, 9419 Battle St, Manassas, VA. Potato Gumbo is a touchingly honest and, at times, zany look at the potentially brutal challenges of aging. Showtimes are 7:30 PM Friday, 2:00 and 7:30 PM Saturday, and 2:00 PM Sunday. The Theatre Lab School of the Dramatic Arts presents Titanic: The Musical Thursday, July 11 through Saturday, July 13 at the Atlas Performing Arts Center, 1333 H St NE, Washington, DC. Performances are 7:30 PM Thursday through Saturday, with an additional 2:00 PM Saturday matinee. Tickets are $15 ($10 students) and available here.

GALA Hispanic Theatre presents Bandit & Bad Blood by Gustavo Ott with Delbis Carbona, Saturday, July 6 and Sunday, July 7. Bandit & Bad Blood is a one-man show about a country that laughs about its own downfalls. A delirious comedy but also a loving poem dedicated to the Americas. Performances will be held at 2:00 PM at GALA Theatre, 3333 14th St NW, Washington, DC. FREE event, no tickets required!

JUNE

The City of Gaithersburg Arts Barn, in partnership with the Theatre Arts Program Partnership (TAPP), presents Love is Love is Love, a Broadway-style cabaret in honor of Pride Month. A musical revue with a twist, Love is Love is Love travels across many moments in relationships, from young love-at-first-glance to dating, first kiss, rejection, envy, starting over and letting go. Performances are Saturday, June 29 at 8:00 PM and Sunday, June 30 at 2:00 PM at the Arts Barn, 311 Kent Square Rd, Gaithersburg, MD. Tickets are $40 and available here.

Angel Rose Artist Collective and T.E.L.A.S. Colectivo Teatral present Yek Peyna Guxgatan (Buenos Días El Salvador/Good Morning El Salvador), a trilingual musical for young audiences with puppets about El Salvador history, Nawat language revitalization and Native American pride by Petrona Xemi Tapepechul. Following a successful run at Sitar Arts Center, Yek Peyna Guxgatan performs Saturday, June 29 at 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM and Sunday, June 30 at 3:00 PM at Mt. Pleasant Neighborhood Library, 3160 16th St NW, Washington, DC. Tickets are free (donations welcomed!) and available here.

Tune Tune Tune Productions presents Ladies in the Day, a captivating soul and jazz musical tribute to Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James, Billie Holiday, Lena Horne, and many more, Saturday, June 29 at 7:00 PM at the Atlas Arts Center’s Lang Theater, 1333 H St NE, Washington, DC. Tickets are $63 and available here.

NextStop Theatre Company presents two performances of Last Ham Standing, a DMV-area improv comedy group presenting a hilarious show full of laughs for the entire family! Last Ham Standing performers take suggestions from the audience to create wacky scenes and funny improv games. They will perform Friday, June 28 at 8:00 PM and Friday, July 19 at 8:00 PM at NextStop Theatre Company, 269 Sunset Park Dr, Herndon, VA. Tickets are $27 and available here.

Prologue Theatre presents an open rehearsal of Emil and the Detectives, a Theater for Young Audiences adaptation of a book by the same name, during its weeklong participation in The Kennedy Center’s Local Theatre Residency Program. The open rehearsal will be held Friday, June 28 at 12:00 PM at the REACH Complex at The Kennedy Center, 2700 F St NW, Washington, DC. Admission is free; however, seating is limited and RSVP is required here.

The Arlington Players and Little Theatre of Alexandria present the 2024 TAP/LTA Night of One Acts, performing Thursday, June 27 through Sunday, July 7 at Thomas Jefferson Community Theatre, 125 S Old Glebe Rd, Arlington, VA. The three one-acts, The Fengolonian Fiasco by Vicki Riba Koestler, North by Bruce Bonafede, and The Dollar Dictator by Keely L. Herrick, are all previously unproduced works that won LTA’s One Act Competition in the fall of 2023. Showtimes are 8:00 PM Thursday (6/27 only) through Saturday and 2:00 PM on Sundays. Tickets are $30 ($25 military/senior and $20 children/students) and available here.

Prince George’s Shakespeare in the Parks presents A Midsummer Night’s Dream, with FREE performances at a variety of parks throughout the county from Sunday, June 23 through Sunday, July 14. Click here for full details!
