2024 Capital Fringe Review: ‘How to Reinvent Yourself in 5 (not-so) easy steps’ by Gennie (G) Minzyk (3 ½ stars)

A personal story of self-discovery and transformation, with the help of a slideshow and a little karaoke.

Gennie (G) Minzyk’s solo production How to Reinvent Yourself in 5 (not-so) easy steps is their personal story of self-discovery and transformation into the individual they were always meant to be, with the help of a slideshow and a little karaoke.

If you enjoy The Moth Radio Hour, this performance will be right up your alley. Standing in front of a white wall with only a microphone, Minzyk is funny and charming in the presentation of their life, from a tomboy adolescent to a teen with a glow-up, into a classic soccer mom, and finally into the proudly queer and confident person on the stage.

Minzyk does a nice job engaging with the audience and their energy is contagiously fun and sassy in all the good ways. Touching on many relatable topics like motherhood and self-doubt, they draw the audience into the story and offer anecdotes accompanied with personal pictures. The production could benefit from more slides to have an image in the background throughout the show. Having the silly images and illustrations projected on the wall added a nice visual aspect.

Gennie (G) Minzyk’s How to Reinvent Yourself in 5 (not-so) easy steps is a comedic telling of their personal journey in the military, going through a divorce, and coming out. Minzyk is vulnerable and genuine and, with an overall joyous vibe in the room as they share their unique experience, the show is intimate and entertaining.
