Review: ‘Improvaganza-A 3-Night Improv Festival’ Presented by Howard Community College’s Arts Collective

Thursday, March 30, 2017, the fun began in The Studio Theatre at Howard Community College with the start of Improvaganza-A 3 Night Improv Festival (with the additional bonus of three Master Classes in Improvisation being held on Saturday, April 1). This is all presented by the HCC Arts Collective and its wonderful “What Improv Group?!”. Each night will feature other area improv troupes and W.I.G. Performing tonight were Fractal, Waiting for Steinberg, Dad Joke, Plan B, and W.I.G. This is a sampling of both long and short improv theater. Long and short relates to the lengths of the skits. The first may last as long as the skit seems to flow, and the second is usually no longer than 10 minutes and can be shorter. Each group gets around 20 minutes.

Photography by Bruce F. Press, featuring Columbia, MD’s What Improv Group with audience members.

The night opened and closed with W.i.G. and several of their wonderful regulars. Opening began with Jordan Colea, JP Desmond, Thomas Matera, Emma McDonnell, and Apryl Motley. Their skits often begin with the audience, and this night was not different. A sweatshirt and a water bottle brought up on stage lead to skits about retail sales and an eccentric bank customer. A shout out for different family relationships lead to a tale of pig slaughter, and one about coworkers became a story line of two astronauts. Colea was a wonderfully empathetic pig and even became a space helmet.

Up next was Fractal a long form team taking part in the Conservatory program at the Baltimore Improv Group. Fractal performs in Baltimore every other Tuesday at 7:30PM. The group features Spencer Clites, Ryan Frommelt Clara Jegede, David Lee, Nadja Martens, Jennifer McCord, Brian Shea, and Rob Wongus. Their section started with a word from the audience, “banana”, and evolved into office workers, a lost child, dating birth control and conception and finally grandmas. The troupe’s technique leads to lots of laughs.

They were followed by Waiting for Steinberg. This troupe does short form and features Keith Becraft, Michael Furr, Rebecca Gerber, Robin Jones, Adam Long and Joel Stob. They had an unusual format called “Elimination”.  They do the same story but keep eliminating one performer. This one started with an underground vacation on an island. They also did a poetry bit using a translator as the performers spouted prose in non-existent languages. This was followed by a Kleenex controversy and a baseball skit.

After Intermission, we were treated to Dad Joke, a two man troupe (Mikael Johnson and Marc Reber), that does long improv and performs in the MD/DC area. Their comedy revolves around parenthood. An viewers suggestion that dad be a coal miner from Georgia became a improv about a father and son reuniting. Johnson and Reber kept things light and humorous even when the topics got dark.

Plan B was up next, and they are one of the founding troupes of the Baltimore Improv Group, and use short form. The group was represented by Josh Baci, Sharon Baldwin, Rob Davis, Frankie Daniels, Julia Hall, Jason Herbert, Gillian Parent, Kevin Permison, Amy Sens, and Kerri Shannon. Plan B used freeze action with audience help as performers grabbed positions and took over from their fellow performers. They also did a bit on the best and worst person for various occupations. However, one of the funniest skits of the evening was when they called up an audience member. It turned out to be  the Dean  of Arts and Humanities at HCC, Valerie Lash. The volunteer was more than willing to add to the humor, and then the performers improvised a day in her life based on questions they asked her.

Photography by Bruce F. Press, featuring Baltimore’s Plan B.

When W.I.G returned this time with members Doug Goodin, Chania Hudson, Lauren Tobiason, and Sierra Young, they brought back a favorite of their repertoire.  They brought up 4 audience members, and the remaining audience did a shout out of things you might teach. Tonight, it included lessons in smoking meat, archery, mini-golf and modeling.

The Studio Theatre was set cabaret style and there were snacks on the tables. Drinks were available at a minimal charge. Along with W.I.G., The Comedy Pigs, Trampus, Door #3 are to appear Friday, and joining them on Saturday will be Charmsical, The Middle West, Penthouse Basements, and Silversmith.

Improvaganza marks W.I.G. last performances of the season, but Arts Collective original devised play runs from June 8-18, 2017. Most of the other troupes can be seen at local theaters and establishments in Maryland and D.C..

Special thanks to S.G. Kramer and Douglas Beatty as the Improv Festival Coordinators, W.I.G. Directors S.G. Kramer and Daniel Johnston, Stage Manager, Linwood Milan, Creative Assistant, Lisa Yerrid, and Production Assistant, CJ Cameron.

Running Time: Two hours and 20 minutes, with an intermission. Note: Running time may vary as the troupes change.

    Interview: A Q & A with Arts Collective@HCC’s ‘IMPROVAGANZA’ Participants: Part One

Howard Community College’s Arts Collective’s What Improv Group?! is presenting Improvaganza, HCC’s (and Howard County’s, too) FIRST Improv Festival with Master Classes, on March 30, 31 and April 1, 2017 at 8pm in HCC’s Studio Theatre at the Horowitz Center. Arts Collective’s Improvaganza Improv Festival will feature twelve outstanding improv troupes from the Baltimore/DC/VA Metro Area.

We had the pleasure to sit down with a few of the folks participating in many various levels in this first-ever improv festival… here’s what they had to say:

Why did the Arts Collective choose to include this 1st-Ever Improv Festival in their 22nd Season?

    Co-Director S.G. Kramer.

Susan G. Kramer: (Arts Collective Producing Artistic Director, What Improv Group?! Co-Director, Improvaganza Co-Coordinator/ Organizer) Organizing and hosting a multi-troupe improv festival with outstanding, eclectic improv troupes from the Baltimore/Washington and surrounding areas has long been an Arts Collective’s dream. For 22 years, Arts Collective has embraced improvisation as powerful-beyond-measure story-telling magic, and the opportunity to bring together like-minded improvisers to share their passion for storytelling and truth-telling in various formats is finally here!

What about performing in this Improv Festival (a first for Arts Collective, HCC, and Howard County) intrigues you?

Co-Director Daniel Johnston. Photo courtesy of Arts Collective@HCC.

Daniel Johnston: (What Improv Group?! Co-Director, Performer, Founding Member) I have been affiliated with Arts Collective both as an employee and community member for nearly ten years now, and they never fail to surprise me with how innovative and creative each season is. Their take on standard things such as Improv is always so unique and expressive, and that’s what appeals the most to me.

Emma K. McDonnell: (What Improv Group?! Performer, Founding Member) It would be great if this event kicked off a long tradition, maybe an annual or bi-annual improv festival, hosted by AC.

Megan Wills: (Silversmith, Trampus, Waiting for Steinberg Casting Director, Coach, Producer)  It’s going to be a great opportunity to network with other creative minds and impress patrons of the arts who might not have been exposed to improv before. We love awakening new passions!

What do you think audiences can expect from this multi-troupe festival?

Tony Lopez: (Door #3 Performer, Unofficial Adventure Coordinator) They will see variety and unexpected depth.  There will be different styles of improv and energy, highlighting different slices through life, humor, emotions, and the repercussions of moment-to-moment decisions.  Not only is every troupe distinct, but so is every show any troupe does, so nothing is ever the same.  Every show is specifically for that particular audience.  Come bask in that.

Susan G. Kramer: Audiences who hunger for various takes on storytelling via improvisation will walk into a performance environment unlike any other Arts Collective event! HCC’s Studio Theatre will be arranged in a warm, funky cabaret atmosphere with treats at every table and beers, soft drinks sold at the bar. Audiences won’t want to miss out on the opportunity to “See All 3 Shows” at an amazing discount, while witnessing three distinct, truly unique shows!

Based on your improv experience, how would you describe the MD/DC/VA improv community, specifically or in general?

Douglas Beatty: (Charmsical, What Improv Group?! Performer, Improvaganza Co-Coordinator) The improv community is diverse, and welcomes all types of people with all different backgrounds, and these groups form small family units that create wonderful shows in spaces of various sizes.   Most improvisers do it for the love of performing alone, and I think the chance to make people laugh and have a nice time really brings people together.   This is especially important during those times we need more joy in our lives.

Kathleen Williams: (Trampus Performer) The communities in DC/MD/VA have different styles and speeds of improv. The classes offered in DC and MD are different in terms of energy level, sharing details, and finding the game.

Megan Wills: It’s an ever-expanding web of extremely intelligent and hilarious performers who have all kinds of varied life experiences because of the diversity of the region. This makes DMV audiences some of the luckiest!

Can you speak to the value of signing up for any of the Master Classes included in this Improv Festival?

Tony Lopez: Improv helps you focus on what’s important – working with your collaborators and making interesting harmony – and to remove things that get in your way – a desire to force your viewpoint on others.  Any good improv workshop will help people to get better at doing these things, and the Master Classes at Improvaganza look to be no exception.

Emma K. McDonnell: The master classes are a great opportunity for people/performers of all skill levels. The experienced improv actor might really enjoy the chance to try something new, and the novice improvisers will be able to work with some of the best local improv experts. There are three great and very different options to choose from, so if someone’s been wanting to try improv, this is a perfect way to do that.

Megan Wills: This is an incredible lineup of teachers, and each one has a unique story to tell – and vital performance skills to teach through improv. It’s a good bet to sign up for any of them.

In what ways, if any, do you think Improvaganza’s Improv Festival will benefit the improv community/ culture?

Douglas Beatty: I really hope it brings more troupes out of the city and into the various counties of Maryland. We have a thriving improv scene in Baltimore city, and part of the joy of improv is seeing and performing with fellow improvisers in other troupes. What Improv Group puts on wonderful, thoughtful improv and it is so nice to welcome fellow artists to join in the fun, and create partnerships for future events.

Tony Lopez: The more that people can watch improv being performed, the better they can get to know this growing art form, and the more chances the people who perform it will have to get better at entertaining a live audience. Most forms of performance are better when experienced live, and perhaps improv is more so, as the improvisers on stage can change the direction of the entire performance based on the feedback of the audience. A festival like Improvaganza increases both that public awareness as well as those performance opportunities.

Susan G. Kramer: It’s our truest hope the guest improv troupes involved (and their fans) might love the improv environment W.I.G. has created here over the past nine years. This could be the beginning of a long-lasting tradition!

Improvaganza plays March 30-April 1, 2017, at 8 PM at the Studio Theatre at the Horowitz Center at Howard Community College – 10901 Little Patuxent Parkway, in Columbia, MD. • Arts Collective @ HCC’s What Improv Group?!’s ‘Love Synchs!’

Arts Collective @ HCC’s What Improv Group?!’s ‘Love Synchs!’

As part of a 2-show Valentine Affair on Feb. 10 and 11, What Improv Group?! of the Howard Community College’s Arts Collective performed the second half of their venue, “Love Synchs!.” (The first part was on Friday, “Love Is…?”.)

W.I.G.?! began in February 2009 and has been about “creating and exploring its unique underground take on improv and storytelling.” They have performed throughout the local area and partnered with Steppenwolf West (Los Angeles). This season it continued to partner with Howard County Poetry and Literature Society and Howard Community College’s Arts and Humanities Division.

Using their fine array of performers from their earlier productions, including Douglas Beatty, Jordan Colea, J.P. Desmond, Noelle Ford, Doug Goodin, Chania Hudson, Daniel Johnston, Thomas Matera, Emma K. McDonnell, Apryl Motely, Dana Panczenko, Lauren Tobiason, Lauren Blake Williams, and Sierra Young, we were entertained cabaret-style including Valentine snacks, sweets and beverages. Each table was covered with hearts both decorative and edible to add to the theme of love.

W.I.G.’s Douglas Beatty. Photo by Bruce F Press Photography.

Tonight’s format was little different than their traditional one.  Loosely, the plot was about a drag-show contest where participants, portrayed by cast members, would be judged on their lip-synching ability. The first act introduced us to the characters, most of whom were gender-switching. Almost all the male performers played females and vice versa. As the emcees of the mayhem, Doug Beatty in a blond wig and Sierra Young with a five o’clock shadow, held the group together throughout the fun.

W.I.G.’s Noelle Ford, Lauren Tobiason, and Lauren Blake Williams. Photo by Bruce F Press Photography.

In the second half, the group took it up a notch as the lip-synching began in earnest lead by two hilarious bits by McDonnell and Ford. However, this is truly an ensemble production and the bravos have to go to the whole group for making this a successful event. They created this wonderful recipe for laughter. As always, each performer complements the others. At the end the audience was up dancing with the artists.

W.I.G.’s 2016-2017 Cast: Back Row: L to R: Daniel Johnston, Lauren Blake Williams, Doug Goodin, Lauren Tobiason, J.P. Desmond, Jordan Colea, Sierra Young, Thomas Matera, Douglas Beatty, Emma McDonnell. Bottom Row, L/R: Chania Hudson, Noelle Ford, Dana Panczenko, and Apyrl Motley. Photography by Bruce Press.

Special nods go to C0-Directors Daniel Johnston and S. G. Kramer, who, as always, kept the action flowing. Linwood Milan was the Stage Manager, and C.J. Cameron was Production Assistant.

Having had the chance to view some of their past productions, it has been a pleasure watching members of W.I.G.?! develop as improvisors.

Don’t worry if you missed this romantic treat because there will be an Improv Festival March 30-April 1 called “Improvaganza” (we’re sure this will be Howard County’s First Ever Improv Festival) which will feature improvisational groups throughout the local area on March 30, 31, and April 1, 2017, including Master Classes on April 1, 2017.

Closing out the season on June 8 – 18, 2017, Arts Collective will mount an Original Devised Play. So, put both events on your calendars.

Arts Collective @ HCC’s Love Synchs! was presented by Howard Community College’s Arts Collective’s What Improv Group?!, on Febuary 11-12, 2017, at Art Collective @ HCC performing in Howard Community College’s Rouse Corporation Foundation Student Center, in Room 400 – 10901 Little Patuxent Parkway, in  Columbia, MD. For future Arts Collective events, go to their website. For tickets, call the box office at (433) 518-1500, or purchase them online.

Both shows feature W.I.G.’s ground-breaking, edgy take on improvisation, complete with audience participation.

“Love Is…?” will be performed on Friday, February 10, 2017. This improv show fuses the stellar work of improv actors with literary love stories curated by HoCoPoLitSo and HCC’s creative writers, exploring the flammable subjects of love, romance, and all matter of the heart.

“Love Synchs!” will follow on Saturday, February 11, 2017. For this show, W.I.G. brings sexy back with its lip-synching contest that brought down the house last season. Only this time, the audience is invited to join the “competition.” Visit howardcc.edu/artscollective for more details.

Review: ‘A Christmas Carol: A Live Radio Play’ at Howard Community College’s Arts Collective

We all could use a bit of good tidings during this winter of our discontent. Fortunately for Howard County theatergoers, this weekend is filled with holiday cheer with four productions of The Nutcracker and two shows based on Dickens’ classic tale of finding the true meaning of Christmas. John Harding reviewed the A Christmas Carol Musical at Toby’s Dinner Theater, so now it’s my turn to share the fun and frivolity of a behind-the-scenes radio rendition at Howard Community College.

The four Scrooges: Left to Right: Jim Hart, Gareth Kelly, Douglas Beatty, and Daniel Johnston. Photo by Emma K. McDonnell.

Last evening we were treated to A Christmas Carol: A Live Radio Play, a production by HCC’s Arts Collective, directed by smart, savvy S. G. Kramer. Smart because she gives her actors a script to read during the show, particularly in the first act, and savvy with her mixing up the parts these actors play. Dozens of performers (singers, musicians, kids and adults) bring these Dickens characters to the stage as the familiar tale unfolds.

Kramer used this method of scripts and changes in last year’s highly touted Love Loss and What I Wore by the late Nora Ephron. It’s a comfortable way for both performers and audience – if things get screwed up, a cue is in front of you. And with the constant changing of parts, the story remains fresh. There’s no chance you will see the same show twice!

This holiday chestnut relates Ebenezer Scrooge’s eerie encounters with a series of visitors – Christmas past, resent and future. Played by Douglas Beatty in the Friday evening show, Scrooge is ultimately transformed from a miserable miser to a caring human being, especially kind to Tiny Tim, the lovable Bennett Horvath in all performances. Sister Bella Horvath as the Good Little Girl charms Santa Claus (and the audience) with her description of the doll she wants for Christmas.

Other standouts include William Stanley III with Tara Hart in the comedic fruitcake commercial the radio broadcast. He also played Santa Claus and Old Joe with a profound voice that has become a signature.

The Ensemble: Doug Beatty, Kira Bennett, Janelle Broderick, Alison Buckley, Adam Czarnecki, Jim Hart, Tara Hart, Bella Horvath, Bennett Horvath, Steve Horvath, Chania Hudson, Daniel Johnston, Gareth Kelly, Valerie Lash, Kathryn Marshall, Apryl Motley, Colin Riley, Gavin Shown, Christopher Sisson, William Stanley III, Armani Veguilla, Sierra Young — and SFX Team//Vocalists featuring “Sonorous”: Brandon Furr, Warren Harris, Wesley LeRoux, and Mary Liberto. Photo by St. Johnn Blondell.

A special nod to Costume Designer Shannon Maddox and Assistant Costume Designer Daniel Johnston for their exquisite 1940’s costumes.

Arts Collective (AC) brings the familiar Dickens tale to life through a 1940’s radio broadcast in a set that deserves our “applause” (as the flashing yellow light reminds us). Andrew M. Haag, Jr. designed the lighting and Linwood Milan created the sound effects – loved the clanking of classes with perfect timing and the spooky noises, all provided by a cappella singers Brandon Furr, Warren Harris, Wesley LeRoux, and Mary Liberto.

The authentic set by Kramer and Emma K. McDonnell, reminds us of that other World War II musical, Annie. I kept expecting the Radio Play vocalists to break into “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile.” Instead they sang Christmas Carols. Kudos to pianist Keith Tittermary for keeping the singers on key and the audience humming along.

Running Time: One hour and 40 minutes, with one 15-minute intermission.

Arts Collective’s A Christmas Carol: A Live Radio Play end its run TODAY, Sunday, December 10, 2016, at 3 PM in Howard Community College’s Horowitz Center Studio Theatre – 10901 Little Patuxent Parkway, in Columbia, MD. For tickets, call the box office at (443) 518-1500, or purchase them online.

Audiences members who bring items for HCC’s Food Pantry will receive a tasty intermission treat.

Review: ‘Underground Rooftop Coffee House’ at Arts Collective @ HCC

Thursday, September, 22, 2016, marked the beginning of the 22nd Season for Howard Community College’s Arts Collective. Thursday night’s performance of the Underground Rooftop Coffee House presented by Arts Collective’s “What Improv Group?!” (W.I.G.), HCC’s Humanities Department, and Howard County Poetry and Literature Society (HoCoPoLitSo) was another step in expanding these young artists’ horizons to include not only poetry but dance, photography and music, in collaboration with artists both on- and off-campus.

Under the direction of S. G. Kramer and Daniel Johnston, W.I.G.’s 2016-2017 cast features a great ensemble that includes “veterans” from previous seasons and several new actors: Douglas Beatty, Jordan Colea, JP John Desmond, Noelle Patricia Ford, Doug Goodin, Chania Hudson, Daniel Johnston, Thomas Matera, Emma K. McDonnell, Apryl Motley, Lauren Tobiason, Lauren Blake Williams, and Sierra Young. All the performances were clever, witty and spontaneous, and the actors were poised and articulate.

What distinguished this particular event was the layered inclusion of multiple artistic elements to inspire and empower the improvisations. The experience began, actually, as you walked towards the building, with dancers (directed by Chelsea Nicole Green and including Heather Cramer, Kylie Giglio,  Jeffrey Mensah, Ada Satterfield, Lea Williams, and Anja Young) creating various forms among the trees and with each other. Upstairs,  at show time, the dancers leapt exuberantly through the audience to signal the beginning of the event. W.I.G. engaged in a series of improvisational challenges that alternated some favorite activities, such as “Plot Points” and “Musical W.I.G.s,” and its interactions with audience members to provide ideas and objects for scenes, with responses to original poetry, visual art, and a spontaneous “post-it” poem.

A chair of HoCoPoLitSo and of HCC’s Humanities Department, Professor Tara Hart in her second year of facilitating the partnership of these organizations with Arts Collective; she works closely with Kramer and Johnston to bring creative writers affiliated with HoCoPoLitSo and this year with HCC’s literary and arts magazine The Muse into the world of W.I.G. These collaborations provide the actors with opportunities to expand their improvisational horizons through the inspiration of original literary pieces. For this year’s Coffee House and its new inclusion of the visual arts, Hart sought Muse contributors who had the gift for “ekphrasis,” in that they had written poems explicitly inspired by visual arts, such as particular paintings or sculpture.

After introductions and a warm-up of Fall Activities performed by the company, Michelle Kreiner read her poem “Like Sculptor’s Clay,” and the actors responded with a creative improv about the metamorphosis of a caterpillar into a butterfly. There would be three more poems that night, read well by their authors.

Tim Singleton recited his poem “Insomnia,” which inspired a scene about a family at breakfast time, and Sylvia Lee’s poem “Emileh Bell” conjured up a piece about a birthday party and a rebellious daughter.

The last piece, Nsikan Akpan’s “Pumpkins,” led to an improv about a little boy and his grandfather at Halloween. Finally, in an interesting take on improvisational writing, the poets themselves left the performance space to compose an original poem in fifteen minutes, using works and phrases the audience posted around the lobby during intermission. The final product, entitled “Imagination Society,” inspired a scene performed by the W.I.G. actors about coworkers and an antidote to an epidemic.

Left: W.I.G. actors Chania Hudson and Jordan Colea. Middle: Coffee House Director of Dance and Performer. Right: W.I.G. actor, Apryl Motley. Photo by Bruce F. Press.

Four photographs taken by local and campus artists Amber Kettenhofen, Jim O’Connor, Leta Dunham, and Paul Goeth, were projected for all to view for a few moments, without titles, before the actors responded creatively to the qualities and feelings evoked by the images with various interesting and relatable topics such as campfires, Jeopardy, cake baking, and yard sales.

As always, there was plenty of audience interaction and the final piece invited audience members to come up and pair with an actor for a round robin of “How-To’s,”learning to do different tasks suggested by audience members.

The Coffee House was only laying the groundwork for a remarkable season ahead, which will include three more shows by W.I.G. ?! around Halloween, The Return of Hallowscream, and Valentine’s Day, Valentine Affair, (most of which will involve HCC’s Humanities Department and HoCoPoLitSo), A Christmas Carol: A Live Radio Play in December, a Three- Night Improv Festival (Improvaganza) in the early Spring, and finally another Original Devised Play in June.

Review: Arts Collective @ HCC’s ‘W.I.G.nition: Actors and Writers Fire It Up’

    WIGnition_728x90

On Friday, April 8, 2016, the fourth and final performance this season of W.I.G., (“What Improv Group?!”) – the improvisational group that is part of Howard Community College’s Arts Collective – performed W.I.G.nition: Actors and Writers Fire It Up at the Smith Theatre.

Jeremiah Anderson performs his spoken word poem "Retrospective", Tara Hart responds (along with 7 other writers and actors); Steve Mandes III's poem "Forgotten Poem", WIG actor, Apryl Motley responds; Shawn Fournier's story "I Hate Being a Twin". (Bottom row: Left to Right) WIG actors Autumn Kramer and Diego Esmolo responds; Darcy Rollow's poem "Flipside", WIG co-director and actor Daniel Johnston responds; Sophia Hirrel's poem "SLAM", WIG actor, and Douglas Beatty responds. In Act 1: Jeremiah Anderson performs his spoken word poem “Retrospective”, Tara Hart responds (along with 7 other writers and actors); Steve Mandes III’s poem “Forgotten Poem”, WIG actor, Apryl Motley responds; Shawn Fournier’s story “I Hate Being a Twin”. (Bottom row: Left to Right). WIG actors Autumn Kramer and Diego Esmolo responds; Darcy Rollow’s poem “Flipside”, WIG co-director and actor Daniel Johnston responds; Sophia Hirrel’s poem “SLAM”, WIG actor, and Douglas Beatty responds. Photo by St. Johnn Blondell.

Friday night’s show was produced in collaboration with HCC’s Creative Writers and the Howard County Poetry and Literature Society, known as HoCoPoLitSo, a forty year old not-for-profit literary arts organization and represented by their Co-Chair, Tara J. Hart.

In Friday night’s production the improvising was connected to the original work written and read by HCC students, staff, HoCoPoLitSo members, and guest artists.

The night started with a provocative original spoken word poem, “Retrospective,” written and read by Jeremiah Anderson, which was followed by a group of both actors and writers who responded to Mr. Anderson’s work in a similar style. It was followed by a poem named “Forgotten Poem” by Steve Mandes III. After Mr. Mandes’ reading, the imaginative and talented improvisers took off.

This season’s W.I.G. group has been together since summer 2015, and I could see how much they have all grown as artists: Douglas Beatty, Diego Esmolo, Doug Goodin, Daniel Johnston, Autumn Kramer, Thomas Matera, Apryl Motley, and Sierra Young.

This performance included two special “secret” guests: former WIG members Noah Bird, who recently moved to California, and Emma K. McDonnell, who lives in New York City. Both showed up for one piece via Skype and and a video recording shown on two large screens onstage. The two responded simultaneously to the non-fiction piece – Ryna May’s very funny and touching memoir “The Phantom Balls.” This idea is a new and interesting concept. It worked well in this format thanks to Stage Manager Linwood Milan.

With S.G. Kramer, Daniel Johnston, and Tara Hart.
With S.G. Kramer, Daniel Johnston, and Tara Hart.

Co-Directors Daniel Johnston and Sue Kramer have encouraged the learning of improvisation. The ability to improvise is one of the key steps to being a great actor. It allows you to make the characters you portray distinctively your own interpretations. It has also become an art form of its own, and it’s not surprising that many of our great actors like Bill Murray, Dan Ackroyd, Steve Carell, and Tina Fey and many of our great comedic performers, like Stephen Colbert and Samantha Bee, all came out of improvisational groups.

My favorite was a bit that had Esmolo along with clever Tom Matera do a piece on art. “Art has no rules,” Matera tells Esmolo as they pose without clothing (they left their pants on.) As Matera stripped spontaneously – so did Esmolo. It was very funny and creative. Somehow, this was inspired by Nsikan Akpan’s impassioned story “The Blind Truth.”

There were two totally improvisational pieces unconnected to the writing, including a new format designed by Johnston called “Plot Points” and at the end audience members paired off to do a small bit with each cast member depicting an ‘impromptu how-to’ tutorial.

(Top Row: Left to Right) Ryna May's memoir "The Phantom Balls", Noah Bird responds via Skype; Nsikan Akpan's story "The Blind Truth", WIG actors Thomas Matera and Diego Esmolo responds.(Bottom row: Left to Right): Torie Costa's story "Piggy Blaze and the Drug Pig", Douglas Goodin and Sierra Young responds; Ingrid Nuttle's memoir "How I Got Banned from Evan and Evan's Apartment", WIG actor Autumn Kramer responds. Photo by St. Johnn Blondell.
In Act 2: (Top Row: Left to Right): Ryna May’s memoir “The Phantom Balls”, Noah Bird responds via Skype; Nsikan Akpan’s story “The Blind Truth”, WIG actors Thomas Matera and Diego Esmolo responds.(Bottom row: Left to Right): Torie Costa’s story “Piggy Blaze”, Douglas Goodin and Sierra Young responds; Ingrid Nuttle’s memoir “How I Got Banned from Evan and Evan’s Apartment”, and WIG actor Autumn Kramer responds. Photo by St. Johnn Blondell.

However, the night belonged to the writers who opened their souls to us for a few minutes in some brilliant pieces of writing.

In addition to the pieces mentioned the following writers read their original works in front of the audience, some for the first time:

Shawn Fournier’s story “I Hate Being a Twin” and Torie Costa’s “Piggy Blaze” were so believable the audience expressed amazement at the talkback after the performance that both were fiction. Ingrid Nuttle’s sometimes funny sometimes shocking memoir “How I Got Banned from Evan and Evan’s Apartment” recalled an intimate glimpse into her life.

The poetry of Darcy Rollow’s “Flipside” inspired a wig change round-robin and Sophia Hirrel’s “SLAM” prompted an improvised poetry slam with a host and three actors as contestants.

    A Report on ‘It’s A Wonderful W.I.G.’ at Arts Collective@HCC

Howard Community College’s Arts Collective continued its spirited 21st season line-up with its second of four shows, a one-night-only holiday improv show called It’s a Wonderful W.I.G., featuring its popular troupe “What Improv Group?!?!” (W.I.G.) on Friday, December 11, at 7:30 p.m., in HCC’s Horowitz Center Studio Theatre. The show was sold out!

Audiences were invited to take a break from the season’s hustle-bustle, and join W.I.G. for jingly-jangly improv fun for all ages. And did they ever, resulting in a sold-out, howling-with-laughter house on the unseasonably warm December evening, celebrating all things holiday-related and seasonal.

The 2015-2016 cast features eleven actors who bring creative and distinct, character-driven talents to the fore, with well-timed, smart, finely drawn details including dance, movement, song, impressions, and pantomime. Kramer and Johnston’s line-up moved at a jolly pace and included extra opportunities for audience participation. An impromptu Holiday Newscast with actors Noah Bird and Daniel Johnston included a spot-on, too-funny impression of Gary Busey (Noah Bird) and on the field reports from Doug Goodin (Weather) within the confines of a mall on Black Friday, and Sierra Young (Sports) with a laser-focused play-by-play on the annual Reindeer Games (yes, the actors performed the competing reindeer to perfection).

Sierra Young, Thomas Matera. Photo by Bruce F. Press Photography

Shannon Willing and Autumn Kramer started a scene with a simple activity suggested by the audience: “Choosing a Christmas Tree,” which evolved into a hilarious day-in-the-life of a husband (Shannon Willing) and wife (Autumn Kramer), their “catty” feline companion (Daniel Johnston) and their almost-too-real Christmas tree formed by Thomas Matera, Diego Esmolo, and Sierra Young. Children, such as seven-year old Isabella Horvath joined in the holiday improv fun as a special guest artists several times throughout the show; Isabella was featured in a scene with Diego Esmolo and Apryl Motley about a holiday dance contest and especially as Mrs. Claus, who had a line out the door of grown-ups with requests (and she delighted the audience by granting actor Scott Lichtor’s wish that the Ravens win “at least a couple games”!) One show-stopping highlight featured Douglas Beatty and a little boy, with Beatty as a first-day-on-the-job mall cop, receiving orders from the boy.

Grandparents were invited to the stage and more than held their own, teaching the W.I.G. cast several kinds of holiday “how-to’s,” with hilarious results.

W.I.G.’s surprises continued to delight throughout the evening. Act One concluded by introducing the a cappella group, “Sonorous,” composed of three HCC students, Brandon Furr, Warren Harris, and Wesley LeRoux, who performed holiday songs in perfect (and fun) harmony in the lobby during intermission. Also, W.I.G.’s new book donation effort to support HCC’s Children’s Learning Center and their “Library for Little Readers” resulted in generous donations of over three dozen books; donors received free intermission treats.

W.I.G.’s previous show in September, Underground Rooftop Coffee House: Voices from the Edge, was held in the college’s Rouse Company Foundation Student Services Hall. Audiences enjoyed a sold-out show in a warm, coffee house setting complete with improv, storytelling, poetry, prose, live music, free treats and a gorgeous view. This event inaugurated a groundbreaking partnership with HCC’s creative writers and the Howard County Poetry and Literature Society, HoCoPoLitSo.

No matter the season: The community is flocking to W.I.G., which, with its well-deserved reputation for excellence, delivers consistently engaging and original storytelling with warmth and a sense of improvised magic.
