Wentworth Gallery is presenting an exhibition of art and photography with multi-award-winning actress Jane Seymour and her son Sean M. Flynn at two special in-gallery appearances at the Wentworth Gallery in the Westfield Montgomery Mall on Friday, May 4 and Saturday, May 5, 2012. She will also be appearing at Tysons Galleria the evening of Saturday, May 5, 2012. The exhibition is open to the general public and free of charge.
Jane Seymour talks about her exhibition in Bethesda and Tysons Corner, her art, her busy career, and Sean’s work.
Joel: When and where did the idea of you and Sean doing a joint exhibition come from?
Jane: The response to Sean’s photography was instantaneous. We introduced his work formally in New York last Spring. People loved his imagery and marveled at his technique. When we showed his work at the Red Dot Art Fair in Miami, during Art Basel last December, he was selected by Art Miami TV as one of two artists to be written about in their review of the art show. Initially we showed his work as small photographic prints in a portfolio, and we sold seven of them immediately. Wentworth Gallery, who has never shown photography in the past, began carrying his work last year, and now other galleries are realizing his appeal. Sean’s photographs have been shown now on a number of occasions, and we will continue showing his work as his portfolio grows with new images.
Which of your works will be part of these exhibition in Bethesda and Tysons Corner?
A selection of original oils, acrylics, watercolors, pastels, pen and inks, and bronze sculptures. Also, a wide selection of limited-edition giclees prints on paper and canvas will be available for acquisition.
When did you begin painting?
I started painting as a child and resumed my passion for it as a way to heal after a very tough time in my life. It was, and still is, my form of meditation and pure joy.
Why do you enjoy working with watercolors, oil, and pastels?
Depending on where I am and how much time I have available for painting, I enjoy all mediums. Watercolor was my first, and it is very portable, so I love the spontaneity of painting on the go.
Oils are wonderful too, but I need much more time and a studio to paint in, although I do plein air pieces too.
Oils and pastels blend so beautifully and the colors are so strong, so I love working with pastels.
Watercolor gives me exquisite transparency, but I sometimes mix mediums for fun and experimentation.
You also create bronze sculptures. Why do you enjoy working with bronze? On the average, how long is the process of creating a bronze sculpture?
Bronze is a long and difficult process, but I love the tactile feel of working in clay. I love sculpting.
I sculpt the original in clay, then transfer it to a hard wax, and then the bronze is cast with the lost wax method. The various patinas I select and love are applied at the end.
What are some of your favorite photographs that Sean has taken that will be part of this exhibition?
I love all of his images, but the ones taken in England are very meaningful to me. Especially ‘The Red Tree.’
What has been the most fun so far working with Sean on these exhibitions?
I’m so proud of his growth and vision as an artist, so I’m even more excited by his success than my own. He has a unique vision of beauty and life.
How do you juggle your acting, writing, art, and jewelry line careers?
I love and am excited by the process of creating. It is something that I do every waking moment. I take my art supplies and my camera with me wherever I go. I have design ideas all the time and the spiritual element is where all inspiration comes from. When I act I love to paint on set as I find it brings me peace and allows me to focus on the character that I’m portraying.
What exciting new projects are coming up for you?
I have three projects coming out soon. The first is a television movie out May 6th on The Hallmark Channel called Lake Effects. Last summer I filmed a feature called Austenland, and that should be out later this year, and I did a guest starring role on the TNT series Franklin and Bash. Elixir will be coming out later on, and I am singing and dancing in that movie.
I’d like people to see the way I see life and hopefully inspire them with my personal vision. I love the idea of communicating beauty in life and in nature, and love color. Each painting has a story, but in art you make it your own. Each painting is like a baby to me and I like them to have good homes!!!
