Fringe Review: ‘Cabaret XXX: Love the One You’re With’ by Grace Kim

Cabaret XXX: Love The One You’re With are the four ladies of Pinky Swear Productions, Toni Rae Brotons (director), Christina Frank, Allyson Harkey, and Karen Lange and backed by the excellent band, Les !@#$ing Exes (translation, The Fuckin’ Exes, as in ex boyfriends–but it’s just part of the show).

Performed in the Baldacchino Gypsy tent at Fort Fringe, early comers are greeted by the “bitches” (it’s ok, that’s how they refer to themselves) who walk around offering to place temporary tattoos on you and interact with you in other ways.

Get your mind out of the gutter, there’s no touching. On second thought, never mind, keep it in the gutter, it may help keep you in line with the tone of the performance – sexy and dirty is what we’re aiming for people, and it’s LOUD. Sometimes TOO LOUD!

This ain’t no Liza Minnelli’s Cabaret!

Cabaret XXX progresses through 13 numbers, mostly singing, but there are 2 numbers where performer Karen Lange reads some audiences’ answers to the question, “Where was the weirdest place you’ve ever fucked?” Karen Lange’s funny and sassy personality shines during these two numbers as well as her rendition of Nine Inch Nail’s “Closer” – such a deliciously raunchy song. Another highlight of the show is the “Like A Virgin” number where the Pinky Swear Ladies, finally, bring out the props (I’m talking dildos!), including an audience member volunteer who reads passages about masturbation as the ladies sing. You can’t be a prude at Cabaret XXX. Naturally, the last number is “Love The One You’re With” that becomes fun when the audience starts singing along.

If you’re at Fort Fringe and the Cabaret is on, certainly drop in and take in some water. The Baldacchino is usually hot, but with these women – it’s on fire!
