‘Galactica’ with Jeffrey Johnson at Black Fox Lounge by Cyle Durkee

Galactica is the drag queen. Jeffrey Johnson is the man behind the makeup. It’s important that you know that as you go into his cabarets, because you get to spend the night with both. And what a lovely night it is!

Jeffrey begins the evening with a live set that he sings himself. His voice is mellow and pleasing to listen to. The first set has several fabulous standards like “Fever” and “If I Only Had a Brain” from The Wizard of Oz. It starts things out on a nice easy note and gives everyone a chance to settle into the evening with a cocktail or two and a bit of light banter.

Then the fun really begins. We are introduced to Galactica! Now, the fun part about Galactica is that she lip-syncs everything, so she gets to be whoever she wants, and we want her to be everybody. We begin this leg of our journey with her rendition of a song that Gilda Radner made famous called “Let’s Talk Dirty to the Animals.” It’s hilarious, and the set continues with a mix of bawdy songs and delightful stand-up comedy that will keep you laughing and drinking the entire time!

And then we get back to Jeffrey for the third set. Jeffrey brought up Will Gartshore as his special guest that night and they had a few wonderful moments together. The third set winds down a bit again, but keeps you entertained. It is a little harder to control the crowd at this point due to the number of drinks most patrons are consuming, but that doesn’t bother Jeffrey. Like the true professional that he is, he lets those that want to chat in the back of the room (and that’s one of the lovely things about cabaret {you can actually talk to your date [if you want you]}) do so while he holds those in front captivated.

The only major issue I had with the show was the arrangement of the speakers in the room. They had a tendency to blast the audience in the front and give a fuzzy sound quality to those in the back of the room. But, strangely this works perfectly for a small cabaret. Depending on how involved you want to be in the actual show, you can move forward or backward in the room fairly freely and that is another reason that I love cabaret: everyone is easy going.

So definitely check out Galactica! She is fun and fabulous and a great night out!
