Ever wanted to play the humbugging Scrooge in Dickens’ A Christmas Carol? Or what about the wicked and haunting ghost of Marley? Perhaps one of the three spirits that haunt the old miser? Well Greenbelt Arts Center is giving you that chance this Christmas season — no experience required! For two weeks only The Renaissance Man (best known for his work at the Maryland Renaissance Festival during the fall season) will be appearing as Tiny Tim, all grown-up of course, and retelling the story of his father’s plight in Scrooge’s employ. Only he seems to have forgotten to bring one key element to the production; the players! A hilarious evening of audience participatory involvement, creating an exquisitely unique show every time, this venture is sure to amuse patrons of all ages, and make fond new Christmas traditions and memories for all involved.
Tiny Tim (also known as actor/author/comedian Christopher Davis) isn’t so tiny anymore, in fact he’s a full grown man, and he’s eager to share his tale with anyone that will listen. The whole experience is a holiday hoot, audience members are asked to write their name on a slip of paper upon picking up their tickets for a chance to be a part of the show! (This ensures that only those in good spirits will be joining the merriment upon the stage.) And from there it’s one big ball of fun — as just about anything can happen.
Davis is a splendid performer. He narrates Dickens’ tale with a lively approach, adding pop culture references, jokes and other little moments of entertainment to keep it fresh. And his audience involvement knows no bounds! In the performance I attended — I was called to the stage as none other than Bob Cratchit — or in this case, Babette Cratchit. We even had a Fredericka for Scrooge’s niece and the ghost of lady Jacky Marley. This made for an uproarious good time as far as the audience was concerned.
It will be Dickens like you’ve never quite remembered it, but an ultimately hilarious and enjoyable evening. Davis even does a few parlor tricks with cornball jokes and juggling at the end of the performance to showcase his other entertaining skills. A marvelous way to spend a holiday evening, especially for those that have always enjoyed the classic tale and wondered what it might be like to step in Scrooge’s shoes even if it is just for one performance.
