From April 5th to May 12th, Compass Rose Theater ushers in the spring with a fully professional production of Lee Blessing’s glorious and life-affirming play, Eleemosynary. On a stage filled with books, wings and spelling bees, Eleemosynary weaves past and present to examine the relationship of three singular women: willfully eccentric Dorothea; her brilliant and estranged daughter, Artie; and Echo, Artie’s bright and sensitive daughter. Tragedy brings them together after years of separation, forcing them to look into their past for a key to their future.
Lee Blessing is an award-winning playwright and a major voice in modern American theater. His plays have garnered praise and numerous nominations from the Pulitzer Prize, Tony Award, and Olivier Award, and have been performed throughout the world. Following the performance of Eleemosynary at Compass Rose Theater, Lee Blessing will be joining us as the keynote speaker the Festival of New Plays on May 18, 2013.
Eleemosynary is directed by DC-based director Matt Bassett. Matt has directed locally with Round House Theater and Arts on the Horizon. Matt holds an MFA in Acting from the University of Tennessee and teaches with Montgomery College, The National Conservatory of the Dramatic Arts, Imagination Stage, and Compass Rose Theater.
Joining Matt Bassett are three powerhouse DC actors making their Compass Rose debuts. Ilona Dulaski will play Dorothea. Ilona has worked with theaters such as The Kennedy Center, Signature Theatre, Round House Theatre, and The Studio Theatre.
Janel Miley will play Artie. Janel’s acting credits include roles with Shakespeare Theatre Company, Shakespeare & Company, Quintessence Theatre, Imagination Stage, and CENTERSTAGE.
Maya Brettell will play Echo. Her regional credits include work with The Studio Theatre, Synetic Theatre, Toby’s Dinner Theatre, and Adventure Theatre MTC.
