I was prepared for stories with odd twists and pithiness that only a great story teller can pull off. James Judd did not disappoint. He is a master in showing the heightening and changing of emotions that keeps one on the edge of their seat, and the detailed descriptions of time and place that provides a word-picture for each listener. Consider Funny Stories 2Â to be a sampler of Judd’s great work. When you just have to hear more, tune into NPR’s Snap Judgement, on which Judd is a regular performer.
The Book Report, written earlier this year, transported the audience back to what it was like to be in Junior High School – especially as an outcast nerd seeking just one moment of glory. Judd also re-introduced us to our own particular nemesis, most likely the cute, adorable teacher’s pet who simpered through each grade. Judd was particularly proficient in showing the heightening and changing of emotions.
Killer Quack employed microscopic descriptions of place and emotions to take us on an emotional ride through a story that was horrifying, as well as curious, in every sense of the word. Judd introduced multiple endings, each more satisfying than the last.
How I made my first friend …. in New England, was a riotous affair illustrating how life situations can create the oddest bedfellows. It is no wonder that facebook fans have repeatedly asked for this story. His characterizations were spot-on and made a story that may have seemed standard fare into something extraordinary.
