Call it a “destination wedding” or site specific theatre, but the Borealis Theatre event of “Crosswalk Weddings” was just a fun time.
All three weekends of Fringe the company will be performing different little acts on the “Streets of Fringe” as they like to call it in their Tickets to an Event series. First, is Crosswalk Weddings and just like it sounds the group performed pretend weddings in the center of the H St. and 7th St. intersections, right in the heart of Chinatown, and then would scatter seconds before the light would change. Tourists walking around could not believe their eyes, most took photos and some believed they just witnessed a real wedding.
The wedding fun began in the Fringe Baldacchino tent when one company member proposed to another, a third dressed in bridal drag played the bagpipes and the rest encouraged spectators to join them on their march to the wedding location.
On the short walk the women and men split groups and walked on opposite sides of the block for the obvious need for a quick bachelorette and bachelor party. That included the great fun of mardi gras beads and a few tiaras for the ladies.
Then one we hit Chinatown the weddings began! There were several couples that got “married” some company members and several passersby who joined in on the fun.
It was a pretty unique performance, but love is love, and it can be pretty fun! Also, it is a free fringe show so there is no reason to miss joining in on the fun.
