South Carolina, 1949. Fifteen-year-old Alice is about to graduate from high school. When she was 7, her parents had promised her to a man who was old enough to be her grandfather, a little-known practice in the rural south, according to Playwright Perri Gaffney.
Gaffney, who plays Alice, was last seen performing in Washington, DC, in Arena Stage’s world premiere production of Polk County, by Zora Neal Hurston and Dorothy Wearing, for which she was nominated for a Helen Hayes Award as Best Supporting Actress for her work in the role of Dicie Long.
In The Resurrection of Alice, she will take us on a chilling, liberating 20-year journey into a marriage that only she can describe, and we are not likely to forget her–or her plight–for a long, long time.
The Resurrection of Alice is originally directed by Sherri Lavie Crockett with additional direction and dramaturgy by Talvin Wilkes. It is made possible in part by support from the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation Special Presenters Initiative in partnership with DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities and The National Endowment for the Arts. The play is being presented by Women’s Works Program and The Essential Theatre (S. Robert Morgan, Founder/Artistic Director).
