I had the chance to catch up with National Chamber Ensemble’s Artistic Director Leo Sushansky earlier this week, and asked him about his upcoming Holiday Concert.
Joel: Word has it that National Chamber Ensemble has a fantastic Holiday Concert this Sunday at 4:30 PM at The Rosslyn Spectrum.
Leo: It’s an annual tradition, and we’re really excited about this concert. We think we have a show the whole family, from young to old, will enjoy.
What’s on the program?
Our Holiday Concert always features wonderful classical selections, as well as holiday favorites. This year, we’ll be performing Leroy Anderson’s “Sleigh Ride,” a Baroque masterpiece, The Swan, from The Carnival of the Animals, Slavonic Dances by Dvorak, and a wonderful Hanukkah Medley. The finale of the incredible Piano Quartet in G Minor by Brahms is featured in the second half of the program, and then we’ll also be doing some fun Jewish Klezmer music. The concert will conclude with a delightful Carols Sing-Along, getting the whole audience involved in the performance.
I hear you have a very exciting guest artist for this concert.
We do! NCE is fortunate to be in a position to give young talented musicians the opportunity to work with and perform with professional world class musicians. This is an experience that is both fun and invaluable to their musical education and development. We will be featuring a wonderful young artist, Avery Gagliano, in our Holiday Concert. At the age of 12, she is a Jack Kent Cooke Young Scholars Program scholarship recipient at the Levine School of Music. Avery has been a winner of a number of competitions, as well as having been featured on NPR’s nationally broadcast program “From the Top.” She will be performing the very beautiful Sonata in E minor for violin and piano by Mozart.
Having studied both the violin and the piano, she will play both instruments at the concert! In the first movement of the sonata, Avery will play on the piano with me playing the violin. In the second movement she will play on the violin with our pianist Natasha Dukan. She will also delight our audience alone at the piano performing an Impromptu and Waltz by Chopin.
Leo, I wish you and National Chamber Ensemble the very best with this wonderful concert. Happy Holidays!
