Howard Community College Presents Arts Collective Dance Company Concert March 6-8, 2014
Continuing its tradition of bringing compelling and powerful dance to the Greater Baltimore Area, the Arts Collective Dance Company (ACDC) of Howard Community College (HCC) presents its eighth annual concert, offering four performances March 6 to 8, 2014, in the college’s Smith Theatre, directed by Joan Nicholas-Walker. The concert will captivate audiences with exciting and inspiring contemporary works by exploring topics including love, vulnerability, turbulence and joy.This year’s ACDC concert features outstanding HCC student dancers and guest artists as well as the stellar choreography of locally and nationally recognized artists, including Valerie Alpert, Renée Brozic Barger, Desirée Koontz-Nachtrieb, Joan Nicholas-Walker, Karen Reedy, Brandon Sinclair, and Trent Williams, Jr.

ACDC’s 2014 Dance Concert Works include: Beat Rojo – Choreographed by Valerie Alpert – A highly energetic music visualization work that highlights the fast paced rhythmic acoustic sounds of Rodrigo and Gabriela.
When I Was… – Choreographed by Joan Nicholas-Walker – A work where the soloist takes the audience on a journey through the timeline of her life.
After Dinner – Choreographed by Renée Brozic Barger –– This ‘silent’ duet alternates bouts of turbulence and tenderness: when the couple finally comes together, their exhausted breathing from the previous battle continues, an aural reminder that wounds from connubial battles never fully go away.
Brozic Barger’s compact and tidy duet uses minimal movement to maximum effect. (Paraphrased from Pamela Squires: The Washington Post December 04, 2001 Style, C7)Evolutive Progressions – Choreographed by Brandon Sinclair – A contemporary work examining the idea of evolution through movement.
In Memory – Choreographed by Karen Reedy – A contemporary duet set to a musical score by Arvo Pärt. This work explores a complex relationship of longing through rich physicality and luscious movement vocabulary. sometimes we fail – Choreographed by Trent Williams, Jr. –– An engaging, honest, and vulnerable work inspired by the choreographer’s life experiences.
Facets – Choreographed by Desirée Koontz-Nachtrieb – An emotionally driven contemporary dance piece that seeks to illustrate via movement the emotions of love, frustration, and misery. Additionally, the piece explores the idea that the human psyche can experience these emotions simultaneously.
Four Parts Love – Joan Nicholas-Walker – Popular music comes to the modern dance stage. Utilizing movement that blurs the line between the modern and jazz styles, this fun dance partners with great love songs from the past.
