If you are looking for a very special way to celebrate Mother’s Day, look no further. National Chamber Ensemble is set to present its final concert of the season on Mother’s Day, Saturday, May 10, 2014. Artistic Director Leo Sushansky is known for programming great music from a wide range of genres, and for creating fun, exciting and welcoming concerts that audiences love. This one has it all. Classical Favorites, Jazz Masterpieces, a Washington, DC Premiere, and … a drawing for chance to win a hot air balloon ride!
NCE’s featured artist in this concert is pianist Burnett Thompson, a musician’s musician whose talents simply know no bounds. In addition to performing his own composition, Shanghai Suite, and other jazz favorites, Thompson and Artistic Director Leo Sushansky will treat their audience to the DC area premiere of Dick Hyman’s Sonata for Violin and Piano.
Dick Hyman is an award winning pianist and composer who has enjoyed a highly successful career in music. Besides accomplishments that include more than 100 recordings and winning two Emmy Awards, Hyman is known as the composer/arranger/conductor/pianist for the Woody Allen films Zelig, The Purple Rose of Cairo, Broadway Danny Rose, Stardust Memories, Hannah and Her Sisters, Radio Days, Bullets Over Broadway, Mighty Aphrodite, Everyone Says “I Love You”, Sweet and Lowdown, The Curse of the Jade Scorpion and Melinda and Melinda.Other scores have included Moonstruck, Scott Joplin, The Lemon Sisters, and Alan and Naomi.
Sushansky is admired for his support of young and emerging musicians and frequently includes them in his concerts. In this concert he will perform Little Milton On the Beach (a duet for two violins composed by longtime National Symphony Orchestra resident composer and violinist Andreas Makris) with his own student, violinist Sean Ganous.
